BURN BAN OFF

BOERNE YOUNG MEN’S SERVICE LEAGUE

The Boerne chapter of the Young Men’s Service League held its first annual awards banquet last Sunday, April 30, at the Geneva Lyceum.

The chapter was started in 2020 by outgoing president, Mona George. The seniors of 2023 are the first graduating class of the organization.

Outgoing board members were recognized along with a touching tribute to honor the memory of board member Juliana Kohler.

The Boerne chapter is made up of 94 moms and 109 young men from the Boerne area. Together they serve 15 local philanthropies and have served 8,374 hours since 2020, serving over 4,000 hours in the 2022-23 school year.

Young men and moms are required to serve 20 service hours; however, several went well beyond those requirements.

Service awards were given to the following young men who served five additional hours; Jayden Davis, Guy George, Shawn George, Joshua Kupferschmid, Clayton VandeBerg, and Quinn Young. Austin Evans and Andrew Pena received the Outstanding Service Award for serving 10 or more extra hours.

The Senior Leadership awards went to Guy George, Connor West and Andrew Pena. Senior awards by high school went to Andrew Pena from Champion, Price Hill from Boerne and Luke Kaiser from Geneva. Guy George received the Spirit of Service Award for serving the most cumulative hours.

Philanthropy awards were given to mom-and-son duos who served the most cumulative hours together: April and Ty Keller and Jennifer and Connor West.

The Heart of YMSL – given to the young man that demonstrates an outstanding commitment to the YMSL mission to assist, serve, and support those in need in our community and to develop leadership skills among the membership and promote mother/son relationships – was awarded to Connor West.

New officers and board members were announced followed by a fun reception.

“The Young Men’s Service League is a 501(c)(3) non-profit national organization,” The national YMSL website states. “Members of YMSL are moms and their teenage sons who volunteer together to serve their local communities during their four years of high school. YMSL currently represents over 12,500 moms and 13,000 young men as part of over 135 chapters across 18 states. YMSL offers moms service opportunities and time together with her son(s) to grow their relationship and to instill in him a heart of service to last a lifetime. In addition to service, as part of its four-year comprehensive program, YMSL teaches leadership and life skills to develop our young men to become the capable, confident and compassionate leaders of tomorrow.”
