Wreck near Comfort claims 5 Lives

COMFORT – Traffic along U.S. 87 between Comfort and Fredericksburg came to a standstill Monday morning after a two-vehicle collision claimed the lives of five men.

COMFORT – Traffic along U.S. 87 between Comfort and Fredericksburg came to a standstill Monday morning after a two-vehicle collision claimed the lives of five men.

State troopers were called shortly before 8 a.m. to the accident scene just north of Comfort. The roadway remained closed for several hours.

One of the victims was 17 years old, investigators said.

Texas Department of Public Safety officials said a preliminary investigation indicates a small, white car — with four occupants including the driver and three other male passengers — was traveling in a no-passing zone and collided head-on with a black car.

Officials said the driver of the black car was the only occupant in the vehicle, but the motorist’s identity has not been released.

“All five occupants in both vehicles involved in this crash died at the scene,” according to a DPS report.

A narrative on a GoFundMe account created by a relative of one of the men in the white car indicated the group was on the way to a job in Fredericksburg at the time of the accident.

According to Kendall County Emergency Medical Services, all but one of the men was dead when first responders arrived.

“The last one we were trying to extricate as he took his last breath basically. He was critically wounded or injured, and we couldn’t get the door open, and he expired,” Kendall County EMS Administrator Brian Webb said.

The white car was headed north on 87 while the black car traveled south when the fatal crash occurred at 7:38 a.m., according to DPS officials.

The wreck happened just past the Kendall County line, heading into Kerr County.

The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office call sheets show a witness to the accident first called 911 at 7:55 a.m., reporting a head-on collision with four or five people seen but not moving.

By 7:58 a.m., another witness reported one of the vehicles caught fire.

Several departments responded to the emergency, including Kendall County EMS, the Comfort Fire Department, Fredericksburg EMS and Fire, the Kerr County Sheriff’s Office, the Gillespie County Sheriff’s Office and DPS.

More information will be reported as it becomes available.
