How sweet it is in Comfort!

COMFORT CHAMBER CHAT

COMFORT CHAMBER CHAT

Oh, the sweet tooth and how to satisfy it! Desserts are that special touch at the end of a meal or as a pickme- up any time it’s needed. Well, look no further than Comfort, where several of our eateries offer sumptuous sweets for your enjoyment. Read on for highlights of just what you can find in Comfort.

Bella Sera, at 429 Front Street, offers a complete array of cheesecakes from New York style to Black Forrest and Amaretto. And wonderful as these are, the all-time favorite at Bella Sera is Tiramisu. Well of course – an Italian dessert at an Italian restaurant! Theirs is authentic with all the flavors discernable and delicious. And one more Italian treat is Cannoli. All the desserts at Bella Sera are made locally. Open for lunch and dinner.

Comfort Coffee Company, located just inside the front door of The 8th Street Market (723 Eighth Street) is the perfect stop for a cuppa joe and a light bite any time you find yourself in Comfort. The baked goods are all homemade from Grandma’s old-fashioned hand-written recipes that call for ingredients like oleo. Who among us is old enough to remember Oleo? Whether young or old, anything that comes from Grandma’s kitchen is a treat! Try the Apple Crumb Cake and you will see why it’s Number One on the list of favorites. Golf ball sized Power Bars are a fun item to try, and there are Scones and Cinnamon Rolls to make your mouth water. Open for light breakfast and lunch.

Next stop is Comfort Pizza at 802 High Street, where the best sweet on the menu is Gelato, made right here in Comfort at Skyline Gelato. The Gelato guy actually learned his craft in Italy, where he also goes for continuing education. The folks at Comfort Pizza rotate nine flavors on a regular basis with a couple regulars. By the way, Gelato is denser and creamier than regular ice cream due to the lower butterfat content. Healthier? Well, that’s a question for the dietician. It’s enough to know that it tastes yummy! Open for lunch and dinner.

Fajita Street, 1004 Front Street, also offers a selection of cheesecakes as well as other delicious layer cakes. The favorite dessert as well as the most interesting among customers is called Chocolate Eruption Cake. It stands tall, a dark chocolate creation with chunks of white chocolate ready to pop out, topped with almonds and caramel. Wow! All the desserts are brought to us from Cheesecake Royale in Dallas. Open for lunch and dinner.

Now on to Flamingo Street, located at 702 Front Street. They, too, have a unique dessert concoction that is a favorite among their clientele – Sticky Toffee Pudding with Vanilla Gelato. This one requires a bit of explanation. The recipe originally hails from Scotland, and it is actually a cake that is very moist (thus its relationship to pudding) and covered with toffee (hence the ‘sticky’ in the name). And at Flamingo Street this creation is served with Vanilla Gelato. Open for lunch and dinner. hens & heifers – yes, all lower case – can be found at 625 High Street. This little place is the perfect respite in the middle of a full day of shopping in Comfort. Coffee, tea and a treat, as well as a chance to peruse things from the past for purchase might characterize hens & heifers. The most sumptuous and popular item on the menu is Carrot Cake, and with good reason. The idea for this version came from a restaurant and tweaked to yield a very moist cake, made without nuts or raisins, and topped with cream cheese frosting. hens & heifers will be closed for a couple months, so check back in the early fall when hopefully they will reopen.

High’s Café is next on the list, located at 726 High Street. High’s features a regular menu of delightful desserts that include cookies, brownies and bars. They, too, offer a specialty item that is a definite crowd-pleaser: Bread Pudding. This one begins with croissants, to which white chocolate chips and apricots are added, and then the creation is topped with Bourbon Butter Sauce. Number two in popularity is the Lemon Yogurt Blueberry Cake with Lemon Glaze. And most unique are the Chocolate Dipped Almond Cookies that are gluten free – no sugar rush. Everything is made onsite every day! Open for lunch and early dinner.

Now for a drive out into the countryside, though not far, to La Calabria at Riven Rock Ranch, 390 Hermann Sons Road. Billed as a Pizzeria, the setting could not be more perfect, overlooking the finest views of the Texas Hill Country. And while pizza and pasta are the specialties, dessert features well on the menu. The most popular dessert item is the Tiramisu, made onsite every day. And the most unique item is called Spaghetti Ice. This dessert originated in Germany, called Spaghetti Eis, and it is simply vanilla ice cream that has been extruded to come out looking just like spaghetti! It is topped with strawberry compote (the sauce on the spaghetti) and topped with a ball of chocolate (the meatball). How clever is that! Open for dinner.

Next up is The Lobby Coffee Shop, located at 523 Seventh Street. A great stop for a morning pick-me-up or an informal lunch. Top on the sweet side of the menu are the blueberry and cinnamon scones with sugar crumb topping. Oatmeal chocolate chip brownies, richer than cookies, come up next on the list. And there is always a sweet bread/loaf each week. All items are scratch-made on-site. Open for a light breakfast and lunch.

And last but not least is The Wander’n Calf, 817 Front Street. Another great spot to enjoy an artisan cup of coffee and something nice to go with it. Breakfast items are available, along with yummy fresh-made baked goods. Try the Blueberry Lemon Scones or the Cinnamon Rolls. They are reputed to be the best of the best. Cookies and sweet breads are also available. Open for a light breakfast.

We hope you have enjoyed our quick tour of the sweets and treats of Comfort, and that you will come visit and decide which are your favorites. Be sure to check days and hours before you head out, as they may change from time to time. We look forward to your visit!
