Young student’s actions recognized by local law enforcement

BEHIND THE BADGE

BEHIND THE BADGE

Last week we welcomed a recruit a little on the young side, but once you hear his story you will understand why he is a great fit for the Boerne Police Department and an exemplary member of our community.

On April 27, Bryce McGray showed extreme bravery during a scary moment in which many of us would have panicked. At approximately 6 p.m., dispatch received a call about an accident in the 200 blk of S. Esser Road. The caller advised a truck had run into a mailbox and the male driver was slumped over the steering wheel. Immediately after the original accident call, dispatch received another call from a young man, later identified as Bryce McGray. He told the dispatcher his father had fallen asleep behind the wheel and crashed. Bryce was able to tell Dispatcher Albert Garcia their exact location and answer some of his questions while remaining calm. Once officers arrived, Bryce said his father had been struck in the head with a baseball while at practice about an hour earlier. While they were driving, his father began to fall asleep and veered into traffic. A few moments later Bryce’s father became unconscious while still driving. Bryce, who was seated in the passenger seat, quickly grabbed the steering wheel and steered the vehicle away from oncoming traffic. Bryce’s quick actions and calm demeanor stopped what could have been a head-on collision.

Bryce is now a 6th grader at Geneva School of Boerne and was very humble about his actions and the impact he had on his family that day. In attendance at his honorary swearing-in ceremony was his family, grandparents and even one of his teachers. It was very clear to us all how proud of him they all were.

This young man took quick action, while remaining calm. It is an innate trait many do not develop until later in life – if at all. For this young man to react the way he did is truly heroic and exemplifies his character and the great work his parents and family have done in raising him. We are so proud of him and grateful to hear his father is doing better.
