The Star brought five awards back home to Boerne last weekend during the Texas Press Association Better Newspaper Contest.
TPA is one of the largest and longest-running newspaper trade associations in the country which “promotes the welfare of Texas newspapers, encourages higher standards of journalism and plays an important role in protecting the public’s right to know as an advocate of First Amendment liberties.”
Every year, newspapers across the state, ranging from big-city metros to small-town criers, submit their best work for judgement by their peers – all vying to take home a certificate showing they are doing good work.
The Star took home five awards this year, all ranging from first place to fourth, peaking at first place for its sports coverage.
“While we don’t do this job for a pat on the back or to win awards, the whole team at The Star works tirelessly to keep our community we love so much informed,” Managing Editor Zachary-Taylor Wright said. “So, seeing my dedicated coworkers recognized for their valiant efforts is just the icing on the cake.”
Sports Editor Kerry Barboza took home the top prize for his expansive sports cov- erage last year, attending every pitch, putt, dribble and score he possibly could.
“It’s always nice to be recognized by your peers,” Barboza said. “I think this award, plus all the others we won, prove that the Boerne Star does a great job covering our local community and does a great job producing a quality product.”
Barboza has been with The Star for more than 20 years, becoming a staple in the community who is repeatedly recognized locally and statewide for his coverage of all things athletic in both Boerne and Kendall County.
The Star also took home a second-place win in the general excellence category, with one judge writing, “(The Star is) packed with local news and information that residents won’t be able to find anywhere. There’s a nice mix of columns on the editorial page, too.”
This category has critics analyzing entire issues of each paper, judging each news-provider from cover to close.
While recognition for the content in The Star is appreciated by all staffers, there’d be no newspaper or staff without the creative designers at Granite Media Partners and our advertising team: Team Lead and Advertising Director Kolleen Roe and Marketing Consultant Jessica Christensen.
“I’m so proud of our teams for all their hard work and dedication to The Boerne Star,” Roe said.
The teams took home fourth place for their advertising over the past year.
The Star was recognized for its political campaign ads during the 2022 election season and for its creative ads promoting local businesses and boutiques.
Lastly, Wright took home two third-place certificates for both his news and feature photography.
“I think this award, plus all the others we won, prove that the Boerne Star does a great job covering our local community and does a great job producing a quality
