Boerne Art Waddle, a wonderful day of art and fun

The 11th Annual Boerne Art Waddle proved to be a great success. We were fortunate to have Connie Clark join us as celebrity judge. Clark has been associated with Hill Country Council for the Arts for over ten years. As the former weekly columnist for Celebrating the Arts in Hill Country, she is a collector and has a love of art in all its man-ifestations from literary to performing to visual. She is a freelance copywriter, reporter, editor and proofreader for various publications and ad agencies. She is a native Texan and has lived in Hill Country for seventeen years.

In the words of the event judge, “There were many beautiful and unique forms of fine and applied arts exhibited at the Waddle, and many spoke to me; however, the following simply stood out and fully engaged my senses.”

Lorie Dorpinghaus, 1st place Applied Arts, uses an intricate process to remove or add colors to white or colored sheets of silk fabrics and then cuts and stitches to create unique hand painted Shibori scarves. “The colors produced were glorious.”

Jodi Dougherty, 1st place Fine Arts, creates oil paintings and her works feature horses. “Her painting called, River Graze, with its clear, crisp colors, made me feel that I could walk up to the horse, pet it, then dip my toes in the clear water. Refreshing!”

Geri Pieper, 2nd place, paints with acrylics. “I have, over the years, viewed many of her abstracts; however, her painting titled, Red Gate Garden Salvia, indicated to me her transitioning into a successful realist style reminiscent of a Henri Rousseau jungle scene.”

Kristy McNelly, 3rd place, is an oil painter who depicts historic buildings and small-town scenes in the country sides we know and love. From a recent trip to Scotland, she created Village Harbour Scene, Ullapool, Scotland. “Having stayed in one of those apartments on a recent trip to the Isle of Skye, the painting immediately caught my eye, and speaks to McNelly’s eye for detail.”

Natalie Drayton received Honorable Mention for her oil painting entitled, Cibolo. “The muted colors of the water, rocks and trees drew me into a peaceful place to sit and ponder big thoughts. Drayton’s Cibolo brings to mind works from Marsden Hartley’s Maine -- using volumetric forms and bold lines.”

Maura Lucchese received Honorable Mention for her magazine collage of Jerry Garcia. “Talk about something different! Lucchese creates large portraits from recycled magazines-- she first draws outlines of her chosen subject, then cuts various shapes and sizes of paper from magazines to apply the ‘color’ to the canvas, fitting them together like a puzzle.”
