Boerne Champion closed out district play in boys basketball Friday night on the road against New Braunfels Canyon with a big win.

Boerne Champion closed out district play in boys basketball Friday night on the road against New Braunfels Canyon with a big win.

Champion clubbed the Cougars, 65-41, and has to wait until Tuesday night to see if they are district champs or finish in second place.

The Chargers are 27-6 overall and 14-2 in 26-5A. Champion is off Tuesday but the rest of the district teams play to close out the regular season. They are chasing Veterans Memorial that ends league play on Tuesday against Kerrville Tivy.

Veterans Memorial is 13-2 and if they win, they move to 14-2 and would take the No. 1 seed in 26-5A. Champion is also 14-2 but the Patriots own the tiebreaker against the Chargers since they swept them. If Tivy beat the Pats, they would have three losses in district and Champion would be district champs.

While that game is going on in Kerrville, the Chargers have added Central Catholic to its schedule for Tuesday as a non-district game, 6:30 p.m.

Jesse Peart led the team with 19 points, Braden Baum added 17 and Braxton Burdick netted 10. Owen Tate scored 6, Hunter Lampkin, Jackson Marshall and Alex Gonzalez all nailed a 3-pointer for 3 points as the Chargers drained a dozen 3s in the game, while Ryan Erdos and Charlie Georgelos both chipped in with 2.

Burdick collected 8 rebounds and 3 assists, Georgelos had 3 assists and Peart dished out 5 assists.
