The Boerne Champion girls basketball team hung with district-leading Wagner for most of the first half but a strong push by the Lady T-Birds to close out the second quarter swung the momentum their way.
Wagner rode that momentum to a 63-46 victory and remained unbeaten in district play as the teams began second-round action.
The Lady Chargers slip to 22-6 overall and 6-2 in district with both 26-5A losses coming to the Thunderbirds.
Champion played Veterans Memorial on Friday and tangles with New Braunfels Canyon Tuesday.
In Tuesday’s game, Champion was leading 12-10 to close out the first period and then pulled ahead in the second at 22-15 in the middle of the quarter but the Thunderbirds heated up from there.
Wagner closed out the quarter on a 16-1 run to take a 31-23 lead into halftime. The Thunderbirds got some beneficial calls from the refs on 3-point shots and went to the line nine times in the quarter.
One of them helped Wagner complete a 5-point play after a made 3-pointer and then two free throws followed on a foul after the shot.
After taking the momentum, the Thunderbirds never lost it and outscored the Lady Chargers in the second half, 32-23.
Grace Erbstoesser scored in all four quarters and paced Champion with 14 points, Madyson Marquard added 11, Olivia Keilman hit three 3s and finished with 9, Adriana Barreiro added 6, Addison Hankins tallied 4 and Christine McGinn had 2.
Erbstoesser also led the team on the boards with 6 rebounds, Marquard and McGinn dished out 2 assists apiece and Keilman came up with 2 steals.
Champion was good at the free-throw line and went 8 for 10.
