The last time Boerne faced Fredericksburg in a girls basketball game, it was last year in the regional finals where the Battlin’ Billies pulled off a stunning last-second win over the Lady Greyhounds to advance to the state tournament.
The two rivals met last Friday in Fredericksburg for the first time since that game and this time there were no surprise endings.
Boerne dominated on its way to a convincing 46-34 win over the Lady Billies.
It was an upset in a way since Fred was ranked No. 2 and Boerne was No. 3 (TABC rankings) but on Friday, the Lady Billies never held the lead in the game against the lesser-ranked team.
Boerne had a fast start, and the Lady Greyhounds went up 11-0 midway through the first quarter and took a 16-9 lead into the second quarter.
Fred made a push in the second and closed it to two at 20-18 after a 9-2 run, but that’s as close as they came to catching the Lady Hounds.
Boerne held a 29-25 edge at the halftime break and then extended the lead to 42-29 by the end of the third after they outscored Fred 13-4 in the period.
The Lady Hounds closed out the third on a 7-0 spurt for its biggest lead of the game at 13 points.
Once the fourth quarter started, the Lady Billies tallied the first five points of the period to trim the lead to 8 points at 42-34 but there was only 90 seconds left in the game at that point.
BHS didn’t score much, but then again, they didn’t have to. Boerne went into stall ball to kill the clock. The Hounds went the first seven minutes without a point until they were fouled and sent to the line where they went 4 for 4 in the final minute to seal the victory.
Fredericksburg only tallied 5 points in the final period since Boerne drained the clock so well and didn’t leave the Battlin’ Billies a lot of scoring opportunities.
Abby Smith led BHS in scoring with 14 points and helped them to their fast start after she scored 8 of her 14 in the first quarter. Smith didn’t miss much and went 5 for 6 from the field in the game.
Averi Aaron and Jamie Ruede both scored 10 points, Savannah Salinas added 5, Jenna Ruede had 4 and Chloe Donnell hit a 3.
Aaron tallied 14 rebounds and 3 assists, Jamie Ruede had 6 assists and Jenna Ruede came up with 3 steals and 3 assists.
Boerne improved to 24-1 overall and Fred drops to 25-3. Boerne is 6-0 in district and began the second round Tuesday, while Fred drops to 5-1 in district. Fredericksburg visits Boerne on Feb. 7 for the second-round rematch.
