Champion charged out of the gate during Tuesday’s non-district boys basketball game against Sam Houston and was leading 26-4 over the Hurricanes in the first quarter.
Sam Houston made a late push and got hot in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to catch the Chargers team that went on to post a 64-59 victory thanks to its strong start.
The Chargers improved to 13-1 overall and hosted Holmes at home on Friday, 6:30 p.m.
After Champion went up 26-4 in the first, the Hurricanes settled down and outscored the Chargers in the second 20-11, but Champion still held a 37-24 lead at halftime.
Champion turned in another strong quarter in the third and outscored Sam Houston, 21-8, and built a 58-32 advantage and it turns out that the Chargers needed most of those points because the Hurricanes made a strong push in the final stanza.
Sam Houston heated up from the outside and knocked down five 3s and outscored the Chargers 27-6, but it wasn’t enough to catch Champion.
Braden Baum is closing in on 1,000 career points is just six points away from the milestone after Tuesday. He finished with 25 points after he scored in every quarter and hit four 3s, while Charlie Georgelos and Dakarai Hodge tallied 14 points apiece after they each drained a pair of 3-pointers each.
Quinn Grable added 4 points, Mason Wyatt nailed a 3 for 3 points and Jackson Marshall and Tre Hudspeth both chipped in with 2 points.
