JORDANTON – School football records continue to tumble as Boerne High’s historic season rolls along.
The 2022 Greyhounds reached another milestone last Friday after Boerne buried the Sandcrabs of Port Lavaca Calhoun, 51-0.
Friday’s win improves the team to 13-0 and the 13 victories is the most ever by a Greyhound football team, surpassing the 2004 squad that recorded 12 wins.
Boerne High plays in the fourth round against Calallen Friday at Alamo Stadium, 7:30 p.m.
Another thing Friday’s win did was move Boerne into December football, another one of their accomplishments this year.
“December football is a huge goal of ours, we’ve been knocking at the door for the last three years and finally made it,” Coach Hendrix said. “That’s a huge accomplishment to be in the final eight, I’m ultra-proud of our team and how prepared we were and how focused we were. We handled the elements and everything. So proud of how they came ready to play.”
A steady drizzle fell in Jourdanton for the entire first half but that didn’t slow down the Greyhounds. Boerne scored on its first six possessions of the game for the 41-0 lead.
The Hounds had five possessions in the first half and punched it into the end zone all five times. Brooks Perez caught a pass from Jaxon Baize and then TJ Dement ran it in from the 1-yard line in the first quarter.
In the second, Dement and Perez both scored again and then Houston Coach Hendrix added to the lead on Boerne’s last possession of the first half on a 2-yard run to make it 34-0 after Joe Ballenger booted his fourth extra point.
Coach Hendrix said he wasn’t really worried about his offense performing in the rain.
“We practice in it, we’ve had a few rain practices the last couple of weeks,” Coach Che Hendrix said. “I thought we would play well, we’re pretty mentally tough so we try not to let things bother us, like the weather and all that kind of stuff.”
Coach Hendrix said he felt like the rain would bother the Sandcrabs more than it would his team.
“I’ve coached against the triple option and have run the triple option, it’s not an easy offense to run in the rain, so I really wasn’t scared of it,” he said.
Whether it was the weather or Boerne’s defense or a combination of the two, Calhoun really struggled to get any kind of offense going.
The Sandcrabs had the ball five times in the first half and only had one 1st down and about 30 total yards from scrimmage. Their first 1st down of the game didn’t come until the 5:29 mark of the second quarter.
On Boerne’s first possession of the third stanza, Jaxon Baize found Braden Baize and the lead was 41-0 and the Hounds had scored on its first six possessions.
Later in the third, Ballenger booted a 36-yard field goal, and in the fourth quarter, Michael Igbo took it to the house from midfield for the 51-yard touchdown gallop for the final score of the night.
