BEEVILLE – Boerne had a fast start in its best-of-three series with Calallen in Game 1 at Beeville, tallying 3 runs in its first at bat, but the Wildcats scored in five of the next six innings and went on to defeat the Greyhounds, 12-6.

The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the series that concluded Saturday in San Antonio. For complete results look in Friday’s Boerne Star.

Calallen coach Steve Chapman tied Bobby Moegel with 1,115 wins for most all-time in Texas high school baseball history with Thursday’s victory.

In the first inning, Kalob Sanchez singled and scored on a Rashawn Galloway RBI double. Cam Johnson walked and Johnson and Galloway’s courtesy runner Max Garcia both scored on a Tyler Garritano triple and it was 3-0 in favor of the Hounds just 10 minutes in, but the Wildcats scored 6 straight runs over the next five innings for the 6-3 lead.

Calallen’s Terik Hickmon drove in 4 of those runs with a 2-run double in the third and a 2-run homer in the fifth at Coastal Bend College.

Dylan Perez ended a four-inning scoring drought for the Hounds and plated a run in the sixth to make it 6-4, but the Wildcats blew it open in the bottom of the frame with 6 runs after sending 12 batters to the plate to take a commanding 12-4 lead.

The Hounds went down swinging and scratched for 2 runs in the top of the seventh but it wasn’t enough as Calallen took a 1-0 series lead.

BHS (32-4) finished with 7 hits including 3 base knocks from Sanchez who scored 2 runs and hit a triple and 2 singles. Johnson also added a single and scored 2 runs for the Hounds, Galloway doubled, Garritano tripled, Garcia scored and Perez plated a run.

It was all hands on deck for the Boerne pitching staff as Andrew Poole started and was replaced by Landon LeStourgeon in the fourth. LeStourgeon went 2 innings and was replaced by Xander Cloudy in the sixth.

Poole suffered his first loss of the year and gave up 8 hits and 3 earned runs. LeStourgeon surrendered 4 hits and 5 earned runs and Cloudy yielded 2 hits and 3 runs and had the staff’s only strikeout in the game.

Calallen didn’t bat in the seventh and scored in five of six innings with the second frame the only time they didn’t score.

Because of the Memorial Day holiday, the Boerne Star went to press with the Tuesday, May 31 issue last Friday after Game 1 of the Boerne - Calallen series but before the series concluded on Saturday. For results of Game 2 and possibly Game 3, see Friday’s Star.
