The old saying that “to the victor goes the spoils” seems to be true especially for the state champion Boerne High boys soccer team.

BHS had a total of 14 players recognized by the District 26-4A coaches after the 2022 season.

Four players earned superlative awards after senior Sam Theiss was named the District MVP, while senior Landon Murphy was named Midfielder of the Year, junior Noah LeMaster was voted the Goalkeeper of the Year and junior Joe Ballenger was picked as the Utility Player of the Year.

First-team selections for the Greyhounds include junior Jess Gonzales, sophomore Hudson Vickery, sophomore Bear Kelly and senior Bryan Fernandez.

Second-team picks for BHS are senior Juan Castro, senior Justin Moore, junior Jake Herman and sophomore Brett Hettie.

Two more Hounds were honorable mention after sophomore Parker Murphy and sophomore Logan Walter both landed on the HM list.

The Boerne High boys capped the 2022 season by defending last year’s state title to make it two in a row. BHS finished the year at 27-2-1 and went 12-0 in district. Once the playoffs started, the Hounds were hardly challenged, at least early on. They beat Austin Achieve, Pleasanton and Austin Eastside Memorial in the first three rounds by a combined score of 16-3 to advance to the regional tournament in McAllen.

Once in the Valley, they rolled past Progreso, 8-1, and then topped Taylor, 6-2, for the regional title and advanced to the state tournament.

Once at state, they sacked Stafford, 7-1, in the state semis and then beat Celina in the finals in OT, 2-1, to wrap up the state championship.
