Marjorie Phyllis Leverton
July 20, 1927 — April 10, 2024
Marjorie Phyllis Leverton passed away on April 10, 2024. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 2, 2024, at 11 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Boerne, Texas. Marjorie was born July 20, 1927, in Little Rock, Arkansas, to Carma and Roland King.
Marjorie was of independent character from the beginning. Once on a train trip to South Texas to visit her grandparents, her mother warned her not to get off the train in Houston. She exited the train, walked through downtown Houston to Foley’s department store, made a purchase and returned to the train in time for departure. At an early age, she was master of her own ship and charted her own territories. In high school, she was a member of the bookworm club, a library monitor and the National Honor Society. She had a lifelong love of books and poetry, often taking her children to the library.
After graduating high school, she received her registered nursing degree from Hotel Dieu in New Orleans, Louisiana, through a program provided by the Women’s Army Corp. My dad used to say she would make a great WAC colonel.
She worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital, for a Houston pediatrician and then Prudential Insurance practicing her nursing skills. While living in Houston, she met and married John, beginning their family.
She is survived by her children, Lynne Wren and her husband James Wren of Houston, and Valerie of Boerne. She was preceded in death by her spouse, John .
The family would like to express their gratitude to all the friends and family who kept her active and engaged even unto the end.
Instead of floral remembrance, the family suggests donations can be made to the American Stroke Foundation, at: https://americanstroke. org/donate.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of the staff of Holt & Holt Funeral Home of Boerne, Texas. To share words of comfort with the family, please visit www.holtfh. com.
