Let’s police ourselves

John F. Kennedy once said, “Change is the law of life, and those who look only to the past and present are certain to miss the future.”

Our Republican candidate was on the campaign trail. He stopped at a family-owned diner. It was a busy time, every seat occupied.

Ah, vacation … those little and not long enough blips in our schedule when we get the opportunity to get away from the hustle and bustle of normal everyday life.

As you read this, the Texas Democratic Convention is in full swing in Dallas.

Hang on. It’s going to be a wild ride.

As we enter July, it’s time to think about our nation’s holiday – Independence Day.

Let’s face it, some of the news from the past few weeks has been pretty crummy, including the Uvalde school shooting, the Jan. 6 hearings and the GOP platform in general. Many of us still need time to process our feelings.

Beginning next week and lasting through July, Boerne Star readers will have the opportunity to help choose the newspaper’s next masthead, or flag, that runs across the top of the front page.

When I first received my driver’s license back in the days when I had a thick head of hair and had to start paying for my own gasoline, it was 55.9 cents per gallon. I remember that distinctively as I saw my hardearned money rolling away as the numbers on the pump spun rapidly like the wheels of a slot machine.

A lady walked up to me, leaned over, and with a smile whispered in my ear, “Now you can say whatever you want!”
