Boerne Champion junior Elizabeth Leachman took a few moments to answer a few questions from Boerne Star sports editor Kerry Barboza after winning her second consecutive Foot Locker national championship last Saturday in San Diego California.
Q: I know you dealt with some injuries and respiratory issues in the fall but it seems like you’re feeling better. Would you consider yourself 100 percent at this point?
A: I wouldn’t say I feel 100 percent yet but I do feel like I’ve progressively felt better each week so hopefully I will be there soon.
Q: How does this Foot Locker national title compare to last year’s and does one mean more than the other?
A: This one was definitely different from last year in that I wasn’t sure whether I would even be there or not, so that definitely made it more special.
Q: As far as last Saturday’s race, you were mid-pack early but caught up. Was that part of your strategy to lay back or was it just a fast start by the field and that’s how the race played out?
A: I wasn’t necessarily trying to be that far back to start placement wise, but I was trying to be conservative with my pace to conserve energy for the second loop.
Q: What did you find to be the most challenging part of the Balboa Park course?
A: The hardest part of the course is definitely how unforgiving it can be if you take it out too hard.
Q: How much of a break will you get over the holidays before focusing on track.
A: I will take a couple weeks of doing only easy intensity training before preparing for track.
