It was a Hutson Hendrix kind of night.
Boerne’s senior defensive standout made his presence known on both sides of the ball Friday, scoring three touchdowns and recovering a key fumble as the Boerne Greyhounds outlasted Victoria West 50-33 for a district road victory.
Hendrix’s play from his linebacking position was noticeable all game as Victoria West gave the ‘Hounds all they could handle for three quarters of the game.
WithBoerne(4-3,2-1in13-5ADII)ahead21-14, Hendrix — inserted into the game on Boerne’s previous possession as a blocking back for running backs Jeff Morrison and Ivan Perez — received the handoff this time on a second-and-goal situation. He burst into the end zone for the 1-yardTD, giving Boerne a 28-14 lead 3:45 before half.
But Victoria drove the length of the field and scored on a Dominick Martinez to Jenesis Jeffries 10-yard TD pass. The Warriors missed the extra point but trailed just 28-20 at half.
Hendrix would score the Greyhounds’firstTD in the second half, his second of the game.
Once again inserted to block on several downs, as Boerne’s running game churned out positive yardage all night, Hendrix took another second-and-goal handoff and leaped into the end zone from inside the 5-yard line for the score.
Boerne again held a double-digit lead 35-20, on the Warriors ... but not for long.
Victoria quarterback Dominick Martinez took Victoria into scoring position and scampered in for a TD from 11 yards out. Victoria’s two-point conversion try failed, but the lead had been trimmed to 35-26 inside of seven minutes to play in the quarter.
The teams exchanged touchdowns to close the third quarter, Boerne on a Hank Hendrix touchdown pass andVictoria with another Martinez touchdown run for a 43-33 score.
The Greyhounds just couldn’t put the Warriors (6-2, 2-2 in district) away until the fourth quarter, which turned into the Hutson Hendrix Show.
After delivering a bone-jarring tackle onVictoria’s Jeffries on the previous defensive series, it was Hendrix finding the end zone for the third time, scoring from 7 yards out to give Boerne a little breathing room at 50-33 after the extra point.
On Victoria’s next drive, Jeffries fumbled while breaking into the Boerne secondary, a fumble recovered by ... Hutson Hendrix.
With less than 9 minutes remaining and a commanding 17-point lead, the Greyhounds pounded the ball on a time-consuming drive, running on 12 of 13 plays before turning the ball over on downs with just 1:22 to play to ice the win.
The ‘Hounds are home Friday when they entertain theVeterans Memorial Patriots, who dropped to 2-5, 1-2 in district play, with a 37-26 loss to Alamo Heights Friday.
