SAN ANTONIO – The Boerne High tennis season came to an end this weekend after the Greyhounds were eliminated at the Region IV-5A tournament held Thursday and Friday at the Blossom tennis courts.
In the regional semifinals, the Greyhounds faced Mission Sharyland and had a good start but eventually fell, 10-5.
Boerne won all three boys doubles matches and then picked up a win in mixed doubles, while Sharyland took all three girls doubles matches to give the Hounds a 4-3 advantage going into singles.
Greyhounds coach Tyson Stewart said they were sitting in a good spot after doubles play.
“Being up 4-3 was big, but in singles they came out on fire,” he said. “Our kids battled but when the match is close, it comes down to a point here and there. Their kids were strong, they battled back after doubles, which is tough.”
Once it went to singles it was basically all Sharyland as they won the first four matches off the court, one in boys singles and three more in girls singles to take a 7-4 advantage.
Owen Labay won his No. 3 boys singles match, 6-0, 6-2, and it was 7-5, but that would be Boerne’s only win in singles.
Sharyland went on to win the next three to close it out at 10-5.
The Greyhounds faced Flour Bluff Friday in the third-place match. At regionals, the two losers of the semifinals play even though there’s no chance of advancing.
Seniors for the Greyhounds this year are Dustin Davis, Garner Graves and Garrett Stevens.
The Hounds made the jump to 5A this year and Stewart said he was proud of how they competed all year.
“Not many people go up into the next classification and make the regional tournament,” he said. “That’s a big program boost for us. It’s something we can build on.”
Boerne was 17-4 overall going into Friday’s match. For results of that contest, look in the Wednesday online edition of the Boerne Star.
