Champion boys win 17th straight district title in cross country, girls team finishes second

KERRVILLE – The varsity cross country teams from Boerne Champion have both advanced to this year’s regional meet after their performances at Wednesday’s District 26-5A meet.

Also, all four Charger teams had the individual winners in their respective races.

The Champion boys edged fellow Boerne ISD school Boerne High by five points to win the boys championship, their 17th district title in a row.

Since the school opened in 2008, the Champion boys have won every district title.

Senior Charlie Houck said they were just living up to expectations.

“It’s a great feeling but we kind of expect it at this point,” he said. “Our varsity boys have won district every year the school has been opened. It’s good but it’s also expected.”

The Lady Chargers were second on Wednesday in Kerrville at Flat Rock Park and were paced by Elizabeth Leachman, the defending 5A champ.

Leachman’s time was about a minute slower than what she ran at state last year, but she got the job done even though she was under the weather recently.

“I think the main goal was just to do what I could. I’m coming off of strep last week and so the idea was to conserve some energy and make sure I had enough to finish well,” she said. “It was awesome to be part of a team here today and see all of the successes.”

Both varsity teams head to the 5A regional meet scheduled for Oct. 21-22 in Corpus Christi. The 5A girls race is Tuesday at 10:30 a.m., while the boys race is scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
