Boerne High almost let a 21-point lead slip away Thursday night in its home opener at BISD stadium against Laredo United.
The Greyhounds squelched a late Longhorns comeback and recorded the 28-21 victory for its first win of the season.
BHS is 1-1 overall and visits Medina Valley Friday as they continue non-district action.
The Greyhounds had a great start to the game and scored on its first two drives while limiting the Longhorns to only one possession in the first quarter.
Boerne held the ball for almost nine minutes in the opening stanza and capped its 12-play opening drive with an Adam Hicks 1-yard touchdown run.
Later in the first half, Ben Bays caught a 13-yard Hank Hendrix TD pass to put the finishing touches on a nine-play possession and it was 14-0 early in the second.
Boerne added to its lead when Hank Hendrix hit brother Hutson Hendrix on a short pass and their advantage grew to 21-0 after the Diego Jimenez PAT, but the Longhorns answered quickly.
Longhorns receiver Colt Lozano galloped to the end zone on a 63-yard bomb from QB Louie Solis to make it 21-7 with 3:26 left until halftime.
After the ensuing kickoff, the Hounds were moving the ball and were poised to bump the lead back to 21 points but a fumble killed the drive and the score stayed 21-7 at the break.
That fumble, plus a blocked field goal attempt and an interception by the Laredo United defense in the second half kept the Longhorns in the contest.
After the interception by the Laredo United defense, the Longhorns took advantage and scored on a QB keeper by Solis and the lead was trimmed to 21-14.
Coach Hendrix said he knew Laredo United wouldn’t go away quietly.
“This is a good football team; they’re coming off a 10-win season,” he said. “They were a third-round playoff team and have been district champs for many years.”
Jake Perez and Bobby Jett Wilkinson helped Boerne keep the lead in the second half after they both came up with interceptions. Perez also had a pick late in the first half to finish with two in the game.
“I was just letting my athleticism work and reading the quarterback,” he said, “and I was having fun out there.”
The Hounds made the Longhorns pay after the Wilkinson interception. They scored eight plays later after Eli Nikolas hauled in a Hank Hendrix toss and it was 28-14 with just under six minutes left.
Laredo United added one more score with 2:00 on the clock and afterwards tried an onside kick, but it was recovered by Brooks Perez to basically seal the victory.
NOTES: Boerne High celebrated 100 years of Greyhound football and former players were invited to the field before kickoff. About 50 former players attended and they spanned various decades dating back to the 1950s. This year’s current group of players shook hands with them and Jake Perez said he really enjoyed meeting them. “It was pretty cool seeing the timeline of Boerne football,” he said.
