School vouchers: Let Texans make the choice
Editor, There are two sides to every coin … or argument.
I want to present just a couple of different viewpoints to the June 30 opinion by Laura Bray, “Just say NO to vouchers ... again.”
First, a “revenge campaign?” This is not a revenge campaign. It is a perfect example of democracy at work.
Voters in those districts were presented with information and they chose what they wanted. Isn’t that the way democracy works?
Second, we as parents and taxpayers must look for information that is pertinent to us. I appreciate that you choose to cite a poll in Arizona, but I am more interested in what Texans think.
A recent poll from UT/Texas Politics Project shows significant support for school choice among Texans. A clear majority, 51%, say they support “establishing a voucher, educational savings account (ESA), or other ‘school choice’ program in Texas.”
Just 30% opposed it and 19% had no opinion. I say let democracy work and We the People will decide what is good for us.
This same poll found 46% of rural Texans support school choice, while only 28% oppose. A full third, 33%, of Democrats support school choice, including 32% of “strong Democrats.” 54% of Blacks and 43% of Hispanics support school choice.
I say again, let democracy work and We the People will decide what is good for us.
