When Boerne High begins its new school year in August, the Greyhounds will have a new swim and water polo coach – and he’s someone familiar to Boerne.
The Greyhounds will be led by Brandon Cheves, a 2008 BHS graduate.
Cheves had previously coached at Steele High School. Cheves was at a recent meet and greet at the Rock House and said it’s great to be back in Boerne.
“It feels good, it’s always been my dream to get back to the place that helped build me and give back to the community that did so much for me and all my friends back in the day,” he said. “It’s important to come back and give back to the community.”
The Boerne and Champion swim teams had previously been coached simultaneously by Scott Slay, who remains with the Chargers.
Because Boerne moved up to the 5A classification this year and added water polo, the district felt they needed another coach since the Greyhounds and Chargers will be competing against each other in both sports.
Champion has had water polo for two years and has finished second in the state for the two seasons that the sport has existed as part of the UIL, but this will be Boerne High’s first year to have a water polo team.
Cheves said he knows they’ll have to build the program from scratch but added that he’s excited about the opportunity.
“It’s going to be a building year, definitely, and I’m looking forward to the challenge,” said Cheves, who teaches social studies and U.S. history. “We hope to start off with a good solid season.”
So, what was Cheves’ best memorial with while playing football and basketball for the Greyhounds?
“Friday Night Lights,” he answered without hesitation. “I was on the field most of the time but you can’t beat it and you can’t beat being out there under the lights. All the community shows up is cheering you on.”
