DPS: Wrong-way crash on 289 kills both drivers

A suspected wrong-way collision Feb. 3 in the 100 block of FM 289 near Comfort claimed the lives of both drivers and left a passenger injured, investigators said.

A preliminary report by Department of Public Safety investigators indicates a 2008 Toyota Camry was traveling in the wrong direction — southbound in the northbound lane — on FM 289 when it was involved in a head-on collision with a 1998 Chevrolet Silverado towing a horse trailer.

Jaynee Boggan, 21, identified as the driver of the Camry, was rushed to University Hospital in San Antonio, where she was pronounced dead, authorities said.

Garry Lee Hohmann, 65, of Waring, who drove the pickup, was also taken to University Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, according to troopers.

A 48-year-old male passenger in the Silverado sustained minor injuries, investigators said.

Law officers sped to the scene of the accident after Kendall County dispatchers received a call at 7:24 p.m.

The passenger in the pickup phoned 911 about the wreck, telling first responders his hand was jammed in the door and he could not escape.

A first responder arriving on the scene at 7:27 p.m. reported Boggan was also pinned in her vehicle.

According to reports, Boggan was unresponsive but breathing. Rescuers called for a hydraulic tool to extract all three victims.

Paramedics arriving at 7:32 p.m. reported finding the pickup and horse trailer off the road and upright, adding the Camry sustained “significant damage to the front,” troopers said.

Paramedics requested a helicopter air-ambulance service, but were told it would be 45 minutes before one could arrive, officials said. They called off the request, opting for emergency vehicle transport.

First responders successfully removed all three from the smashed vehicles at 8:01 p.m.

The investigation is continuing, but for now no further details are being released, troopers said.

This will be the worst day for this community for a long time. Garry was a wonderful soul and helped so many in and around Comfort. Love you always, dad.
