Educators, parents deserve well-funded public schools
Editor, Congress recently rejected a private school voucher proposal by Texas Rep. Chip Roy to create a nationwide school voucher program (https://bjconline. org/house-rejects-nationw ide-school-voucher-amendment-033123/).
Apparently, Chip doesn’t read Texas newspapers. Public education leaders across the state are speaking out about the dire need to increase funding for public schools.
Parents have seen firsthand how music and sports programs keep kids in school and unite the community. But so-called “parental choice” vouchers will be the beginning of the end of Friday Night Lights, because vouchers will rob public schools of money for extracurricular programs.
And few if any private schools have the funds required to build stadiums and performance venues, foster young talent, or field competitive teams.
In fact, the true per-pupil cost to provide these programs is well above what vouchers will cover.
Give public schools the money required to fund extracurriculars, fairly compensate teachers and keep schools safe. Say “No” to Chip Roy and “Yes” to Friday Night Lights.
