The Boerne Independent School District just announced the Athletic Hall of Honor Class of 2024 inductees.
This year’s recipients are Erik Halgunseth (BHS, ‘95) Kristen Schramek Bates (BHS, ‘03), and the 2008 and 2009 Champion Chargers Boys Cross Country teams, with Dr. Ralph J. “Bud” Curtis named the Bill Canavan Memorial Benefactor Award recipient.
“The 2024 Athletic Hall of Honor inductees represent the best of the best in Boerne ISD history,” Boerne ISD Athletic Director and Athletic Hall of Honor Chair, Stan Leech said. “When you look at the accomplishments of these outstanding individuals you see excellence, not only in their athletic accomplishments but in giving back to the community. We could not be prouder to induct this special group of people to the Athletic Hall of Honor.”
Erik Halgunseth
Erik Halgunseth was a record-setting basketball player for the Boerne Greyhounds, earning several national, state, regional, and district accolades, including a USA Today All-American Honorable Mention.
While with the Greyhounds, he was named to two All-State teams (TSWA 1st-team, TABC 2nd-team), as well as 1st-team All-Region by TABC. He was also named 1st-team All-District, and to the San Antonio Express News 1st Team.
Halgunseth was a standout for the Greyhounds, having been selected to play in the McDonald’s THSCAAll-Star Game, as well as the South Texas, and Nemo Herrera All Star Games.
He set several school records, including most points in a season (1,046), most free throws (241), and best free-throw percentage (82 percent). He averaged nearly 32 points per game in his senior year.
After graduating from Boerne High School in 1995, Halgunseth was a two-time All-Conference selection for Concordia University and Texas Lutheran University. He was also named the Heart of Texas Conference Freshman of the Year while at Concordia.
He played 12 years professionally in the Liga Nacional Boloncesto Professional League in Mexico, where he won two championships and was named an All-Star.
Kristen Schramek Bates Kristen Schramek Bates was a standout volleyball player for the Boerne Greyhounds where she was a four-year starter, as well as team captain in her junior and senior years.
During her four-year run with the Greyhounds, she earned several state, regional and district honors, including being named 1st Team All-State and 1st Team Academic All-State in her senior year. She earned Academic All-District honors all four years in high school.
In her career she was named 1st Team All District, one of the top 20 players in the greater San Antonio area, 2nd team All District, as well as Newcomer of the Year, and 2nd team All-City by the San Antonio Express News.
She excelled off the court as well and was a member of the National Honor Society as well as Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Habitat for Humanity, and more. She is a 2003 graduate of Boerne High School.
She earned a scholarship to Baylor University where she led the team with 485 digs in 2006, ranking third on Baylor’s single season record list and solidifying her place as the career leader in digs per game.
Academically, Schramek Bates excelled as well, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and a Master of Science in Sports Management. She earned Quadruple Academic All-Big 12 first-team honors and her inclusion in the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Rolls. She currently serves as the Assistant Director of Athletic Academic Advising at the University of the Incarnate Word, where she helped the Cardinals post the highest GPA on record in Spring 2024.
2008 and 2009 Boerne Champion Boys Cross Country Teams
The 2008 and 2009 Champion Chargers Boys Cross Country Teams earned backto- back state championships, as well as the 2009 Nike National Championship.
The Chargers won the 2009 Nike National Championship by beating a team from Spokane, Washington by six points, 195-201. In their back-to-back state championship seasons, the Chargers dominated the field, winning by over 140 total points.
During their historic run, the Chargers also dominated by winning District and Regional Championships as well.
The Chargers were the first team in school history to win a state championship.
The Chargers were coached by Dave Fulkerson, a 2016 inductee to the BISD Athletic Hall of Honor, and Erin Bradley.
Members of the historic teams were Josh Hernandez, Colby McCune, Nathan Christianson, Ethan Doherty, Ryan Miller, Will Mack, Moses Luevano and Travis Barclay.
Dr. Ralph J. “Bud” Curtis
Dr. Ralph J. “Bud” Curtis is the recipient of the Bill Canavan Memorial Benefactor Award as has been instrumental in the growth and success of Boerne ISD athletics.
Dr. Curtis is a successful orthopedic surgeon and has volunteered his time as the Boerne ISD team physician since 2001 where he has assisted thousands of students during that span.
He attended the University of Texas at Austin and played football for the Longhorns. After receiving his undergraduate degree, he attended medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio where he also completed his orthopedic residency. Dr. Curtis completed his fellowship in Sports Medicine in both San Antonio and New York. He began practicing in San Antonio and has been a physician with the Sports Medicine Associates of San Antonio since 2004.
He also served as team physician for the San Antonio Riders World League of American Football from 1991-1992 and the San Antonio Texans of the Canadian Football League in 1995.
