G Memorial Day Weekend on the Hill Country Mile, Boerne’s historic downtown district, meant only one thing — Boerne Art Waddle (www. boerneartwaddle.com).
Live music set the mood for Waddlers on May 25, where Art Waddle partnered with Music on the Mile, that featured 10 venues, 20-plus bands and a variety of musical genres (www.musiconthemile.com).
Waddlers’ senses of both sight and sound were satiated as they strolled among multiple locations of the outside art market, which provided an assortment of both original fine and applied artworks.
Jonathan Barnes received a first-place rosette for the consistency of his watercolors, many of which were maritime scenes reminiscent of shrimp boats returning to port along the Gulf Coast.
The gem in his collection, however, was a young man who had created a “Tribute to Snails” — Congratulations, Cooper, on the sale.
Kristy McNelly took home second-place honors with her private studio booth filled with people, places and animals that she loves to paint in oil. Visitors stood in awe as she effortlessly painted a beautiful horse’s head and completed by the Waddle’s end.
Third-place honors went to a newcomer, Bjorn Sjogren, whose abstract paintings are a near perfect definition of the genre, “If an abstract artwork can be hung horizontally or vertically, topside up or upside down, you nailed it.”
Honorable mentions were awarded to Boerne ISD student artists Mykala Jones, for the consistency of execution in her body of work drawn in colored pencils and painted in oil; and Kennedy Holland, for her attention to detail in her clay and mixed media artwork.
The weekend kicked off Friday with an Artists Meetand- Greet reception hosted by Carriage House Gallery, Gallery 195, The Downtown DIY and The Sanctuary for the Vintage Soul, where the Hill Country Mile intersects with Rosewood Avenue.
Susan Baker Logrbrinck, whose free-flow fiber artwork, Where the Beautiful Bluebonnets Grow, unveiled this year’s art poster and signed copies in the limited edition of 100 prints for customers that evening and during the busy weekend.
Along with the near two dozen gallery artists, individual artists and artisans’ booths, several students representing the fine arts department of Boerne ISD participated in the 12th annual Art Waddle event.
Student artists at the fine arts booth included, from Champion High School, Emma Barraza, Rowan Berberek, Kalena Holland, Kennedy Holland, Joshika Kaipu, Cole McGown, Ella Notzon and Azlie Webster; and Mykala Jones, representing Boerne High School.
This partnership provided HCCArts the opportunity to announce its inaugural Fine Arts Mentorship program. We are grateful to the exhibiting artists who took time to speak with the students, visitors who supported their efforts with purchases of their original artworks and prints, and parents who worked tirelessly behind the scenes in the sometimes- paralyzing heat.
