Tips for staying safe this summer

BEHIND THE BADGE

As the warmth of summertime approaches and we eagerly anticipate graduations, vacations and celebrations, it’s also important to prioritize safety. We would like to share with you some invaluable tips to ensure your festivities remain fun and incident-free.

Drinking and driving

Whether it’s a graduation party or a weekend getaway, if alcohol is involved, plan ahead. Designate a sober driver or arrange alternative transportation. The responsibility of ensuring everyone’s safety rests with each of us. Remember these key points: • Never drink and drive.

• Stop anyone impaired from getting behind the wheel.

• Hosts should ensure all guests have a safe ride home.

• Report any drunk drivers by dialing 911.

• Always buckle up; it’s your best protection against impaired drivers.

Vehicle safety and security

Protect your vehicle from theft or vandalism with these precautions: • Never leave your vehicle unattended with windows down or doors unlocked.

• Take your key fobs with you and never leave them inside your vehicle.

• Park in well-lit areas or inside your garage, especially overnight.

• Keep valuables out of sight or, better yet, remove them entirely.

• Never leave children or pets alone in a vehicle,

as temperatures can quickly become dangerous.

Vacation safety and security

Before embarking on your vacation, take steps to safeguard your home:

• Utilize the Boerne Police Department’s house watch service for added security.

• Ensure all entry points are locked.

• Arrange for a trusted neighbor or friend to monitor your property.

• Temporarily halt mail delivery or arrange for it to be collected.

• Use timers for lights to give the impression that people are home.

• Make sure your exterior motion sensor lighting is working. They can deter potential intruders.

• Store valuables safely and discreetly.

• Refrain from sharing vacation plans or posting updates on social media until after your return.

By adhering to these simple safety measures, you can enjoy the summer months with peace of mind. Let’s make this season one filled with cherished memories and safe experiences for all.
