Greyhounds remain perfect in 4A baseball playoffs

Boerne High’s perfect run in the 4A baseball playoffs continued after they swept their second straight opponent in the postseason.

After dispatching the Rockets of JFK in the first round in two, the Greyhounds swept Navasota last weekend to improve their playoff record to 4-0.

BHS and Navasota started their series Thursday in Del Valle, but Game 1 was stopped at the start of the fifth frame due to the weather.

It was moved to Buda Johnson on Friday where it resumed at 5 p.m. The teams didn’t even take an hour to play the final three innings, with Boerne winning, 6-1. The score was 4-1 when it was stopped Thursday.

The teams played Game 2 immediately after the first game at Johnson and the Hounds closed it out via the run rule.

BHS is 26-8 overall and faces El Campo in the third round in a best-of-three series. All games take place in Sinton.

Game 1 is Thursday at 7 p.m. The team will stay overnight in the area and take the field for Game 2 Friday at 5 p.m. A third game, if needed, is 30 minutes after the second game.

Game 2

Boerne’s 10-0 win over Navasota Friday marks the second time the Hound hardball team closed out a playoff series with a score of 10-0.

BHS also ended their first-round series against Kennedy with a 10-0 victory the previous week in five innings. Last Friday’s game went six innings.

Navasota didn’t have any answers for Boerne pitcher Jackson Grimes who threw a no hitter and picked up the win on 99 pitches.

Grimes only walked 3 batters and he struck out 8. Two of the walks came in the second and the other was in the third.

A BHS error allowed another Rattlers runner to reach in the fourth and no Navasota player made it past second base in the game.

Reese House singled in the second to bring in Ryan Hooper, who reached on a single. Hooper moved to second on a Jackson Grimes walk and scored on the House hit for the 1-0 lead.

The Hounds added 3 more runs in the fourth to open up a 4-0 lead. An error and a hit batter allowed Hooper to bring in a run.

Grant Tamplet doubled and pushed in 2 more runs.

Dylan Perez led off the fifth and eventually scored on a Hudson McNew single and it was 5-0.

The Hounds closed it out in the bottom of the sixth with 5 more runs to end it via the mercy rule.

Grimes reached on an error to start the inning. With one out, Tamplet

Game 1

Boerne had a good start to Thursday’s game in Del Valle and scored 3 runs in the second inning.

Singles from Hudson McNew and Ryan Hooper, along with an error on a Jackson Grimes hit loaded the bases.

From there, Grant Tamplet cleared the bases with a 3 RBI double and BHS was up 3-0.

It stayed there until the fourth when Dylan Perez tripled to start the inning. Walker Hill hit a sac fly to score Perez and it was 4-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, a walk, a fielder’s choice and a single put Navasota on the board with a run to make it 4-1 but that would be their only run of the game and the series.

The contest was halted at the end of the fourth because of the weather and resumed Friday at Buda Johnson.

In the fifth, a Reese House walk, followed by errors on Grant Tamplet and Dylan Perez hits allowed House to score and bump the lead to 5-1.

In the top of the seventh, the Greyhounds pushed in one more insurance run.

Jackson Grimes walked and a House sac bunt moved Grimes to second. Tamplet followed and singled to center field to score Grimes and the score was 6-1 as the game went to the bottom of the seventh.

Navasota put one runner on in the bottom of the seventh via a single with one out, but the Boerne defense retired the side with a fielder’s choice and a ground out to end it.

Campbell Jackson went all 7 innings and threw 89 pitches in the win. He gave up 5 hits, 1 run, 2 walks and struck out 7.

BHS finished with 9 hits, including triples from Dylan Perez and Hudson McNew. Perez also walked and scored a run, while McNew added 2 singles to his triple and scored a run.
