Voters place Bruce, Pipes on school board

The lone Boerne Independent School District incumbent on Saturday’s ballot will be back in his seat when the board meets May 13.

Joining Carlin Friar, the re-elected Place 1 trustee and current board president, will be new trustees Dallas Pipes and Courtney Darter Bruce.

All three candidates won their respective races in decisive fashion. Carlin raked in 60% of the Place 1 early votes and never looked back. He received 1,866 total votes, with challengers Mike Stewart receiving 848 and Candace Affeldt drawing 375.

Pipes won in his first attempt to get on the board. He easily outdistanced opponent Noah Oviedo, 2,120 to 998, which is a 2-to-1 margin (68%-32%). He will fill the Place 2 seat left empty when Joe Tidwell declined to run for re-election.

Courtney Darter Bruce joins Pipes as a first-time trustee, beating Thomas Nordstrand 2,602 to 484 (84%-16%). She will assume the Place 3 seat vacated by Jessica Davila, who chose to step away from the board as well.

All three will be sworn in at Monday’s school board meeting, which begins at 6:30 p.m.

Friar said visibility and being approachable were key during his campaign.

“I do everything I can to make myself very visible in the community. We worked our circles of influences, and had friends working their circles of influence,” Friar said. “I am out in the community as much as I can be. That’s what you do.”

Although turnout was low, Friar took his win as a sign that voters respect and appreciate the job the board is doing.

“Overall, I take this as a positive reflection on the school district,” he said. “Getting out the message about the success our district has had, and the continuity on our board right now, is key with a new superintendent now firmly in place.

“We’ve got a lot of great things going on within our district, and I just have a passion for serving the district,” he added.

Newcomer Darter Bruce said she spent months campaigning after filing with a message of “One.”

“One community, one school district, with one goal, unity,” Darter Bruce said.

“I built my campaign about being one and unifying the district. I wanted (voters) to be aware that we are growing quickly, and we want responsible growth. And while we are growing so quickly, we want to remain one in our approach and goals.”

She said she appreciated meeting with individuals in leadership roles throughout the county and in Boerne and Fair Oaks Ranch. The most beneficial aspect (of campaigning) was meeting with community leaders in Fair Oaks and Boerne, she said.

“I met with just about every leader,” she said, “just to let them know who I am from a leadership perspective.” She said she gained valuable insight into the leadership qualities of others.

“In every meeting I had, I’d leave feeling more equipped to lead. It’s just so reaffirming to the vision and the hope I have for the board,” she said. “It was really eye-opening, hearing from them on their growth, and how they handle it.

“I want to be a bridge-builder all across the district. I really do have the heart for our community and all of our students,” she added.

The winners will be sworn in May 13 at 6:30 p.m. board meeting.
