Both Chargers and Greyhounds sending athletes to compete
The UIL state track and field meet is scheduled for this weekend. It kicks off Thursday and continues through Saturday and Boerne ISD will have several athletes competing Thursday and Friday.
Boerne High
The 4A meet is scheduled for Thursday and Boerne’s Kendall Lemm will get things going Thursday morning when field events start.
Lemm competes in the high jump where she is a three-time state qualifier. She won silver two years ago as a sophomore and also competed last year.
The 4A high jump starts Thursday at 9 a.m. and Lemm cleared 5-6 at regionals to win it. There are two others at 5-6, two at 5-7 and another at 5-8, while there is a 5-5, 5-4 and a 5-2 qualifier. Lemm is seeded 6th going into the event.
Two Boerne boys relays teams will compete in the running session that starts Thursday late afternoon.
The 4x100 is the first race of the day at the 5 p.m. running session and Boerne’s relay includes Woody Goen, William Freeman, Michael Igbo and Charlie Stahl. The group qualified with a 41.69, which is the fifth-best time coming in and Boerne is right in the thick of things.
There is a glut of teams running in the 41s to qualify and Gilmer is No. 1 at 41.10, Aubrey is No. 2 at 41.38, Iowa Colony is third at 41.62, Huffman Hargrave is fourth at 41.67, followed by Boerne in fifth at 41.69, Palestine in sixth with a 41.71 and Waxahachie Life School is seventh at 41.83.
Igbo, Freeman, Stahl and Wyatt Watts will compete in the 4x200 relay and they are seeded seventh going into the race with a 1:28.68 in the field of nine teams. Gilmer is the top team at 1:25.46.
Champion
The 5A meet is scheduled for Friday and kicks off at 9 a.m. with the 3200 and field events.
Charger Elizabeth Leachman leads the Champion entries and qualified in three events. She will race in the 3200 and qualified with a 10:00.88, which is 42 seconds faster than the second-place qualifier, Sara Morefield of Lucas Lovejoy, who came in with a 10:42.
Charlie Houck will race in the boys 3200 and enters the race with a 9:24.94 and is the ninth seed going in, but only 19 seconds separates the No. 1 seed from the No. 9 seed.
Hayden Brace will compete in the triple jump after he won the region with a mark of 45-05 and is the No. 6 seed going into the event.
Brooks Jones is also entered in a field event and qualified in the pole vault after he cleared 15-0.
Jones was third at regionals and made it as a wildcard but the top two state qualifiers are from Region IV (Leander Rouse and Gregory- Portland) and both cleared 15-6 at regionals.
The top two finishers in each region, plus one other entry, regardless of region, also make it to state.
Jones is the sixth seed going into state.
Ephraim Tonn-Bourg will also compete in the two wheelchair events offered at state, the 100 and 400.
Leachman is also scheduled to run in the 800 and was second at regionals. She has the third-best time in the state going in with a 2:09.90. The top two times going in are 2:09.32 and 2:09.56.
