Comfort opens playoffs this week vs. Jim Ned
Comfort battled Llano for third-place in the District 5-3A standings last Friday and defeated the Yellowjackets at home, 10-6.
Comfort and Llano were tied at 5-4 in district going into Friday but with the Bobcats’ victory, they improve to 6-4 and take third, while the Yellowjackets slip to 5-5 and fall to fourth.
The Bobcats improved to 17-7 overall and open the playoffs this week with a series against Tuscola Jim Ned.
Game 1 is Thursday at Jim Ned, 6 p.m. and Game 2 is Friday in Comfort at 4 p.m.
A third game if needed, follows the second game.
Comfort swept Llano this year and beat them 10-2 in their first meeting.
In last Friday’s game, Llano struck first with 2 runs in the top of the first, but Comfort answered in a big way. The Bobcats fired back with 8 runs in the bottom half of the inning for the 8-2 lead at the end of one.
A Mason Matt double scored 2 runs and a Luke Bohnert single gave Comfort a 3-2 lead. A couple of walks and an error helped the Bobcats push in 5 more runs to take control and score its 8 runs.
Llano cut into the lead with 3 runs in the fourth frame and used 2 singles, a double and a triple to get its 3 runs and it was 8-5.
Comfort answered again, this time in the bottom of the fifth, with 2 runs after Micah Nye doubled and Luke Bohnert homered to bring in Nye and make it 10-5.
It stayed there until the top of the seventh when Llano tried to rally. The Yellowjackets put on four runners during the inning but only scored one run.
Llano had the bases loaded but there were two outs and Comfort pitcher Zach Jones struck out the next batter to end it.
Llano actually outhit Comfort, 11-8, but the Jackets did commit 4 errors.
Luke Bohnert had a solid game for Comfort and finished with a homer and a single, 4 RBI and 2 runs scored, Micah Nye doubled and scored, while Mason Matt also doubled and singled, pushed in a run, took a walk and scored once.
Mason West plated 2 runs, Brooks Davis singled and scored, Izzy Lopez singled, Tucker Rust walked and scored, Noah Bohnert walked, singled and scored and Zach Jones walked, picked up a run and scored once.
Jones went 4 innings and picked up the win on the bump. He scattered 8 hits, gave up 5 runs, no walks and struck out 3 and threw 107 pitches in his four innings of work.
Mason Matter pitched the final three frames and yielded 2 hits, didn’t give up an earned run, walked 5 and fanned 5.
