Chargers face Buda Hays in series to start postseason
Only Seguin stood between the Champion baseball team and this year’s 26-5A title.
A Chargers win last Friday against the Matadors would give Champion its first district title in five years.
Seguin made it interesting and took a 3-1 lead by the fifth frame, but a 7-run sixth inning gave the Chargers the 8-3 win.
Champion wrapped up its first district crown since 2019 and ends 26-5A play at 13-2. They are 26-6 overall and play Buda Hays in the first round.
Game 1 is Thursday at Champion, 7 p.m., Game 2 is Friday at Hays, 7 p.m. and the Chargers will host Game 3, if needed, Saturday, 2 p.m.
The Chargers had a good start to Friday’s game and took a 1-0 lead in the first but didn’t score again until the sixth frame.
In the first, Jordan Ballin singled and made it to second on a bad throw to first. Ballin stole third and then came home on an Evan Kuhl sac fly.
Seguin tied it up with a run in the top of the third when the Matadors scored with a single, double and sac fly to make it 1-1.
Seguin added to its lead in the fifth with a single, double, sac fly and an error and took a 3-1 lead, but the wheels fell off the Wagon for the Matadors after they gave up 7 runs.
Griffin Welfel pitched well for the Matadors but only lasted 3.1 innings before he was pulled with a 3-1 advantage.
Creed Weaver came in and gave up 3 runs before being replaced by Matthew Marek who surrendered 4 runs.
Champion put its first five batters on in the top of the sixth with a walk, single, walk, single and a hit batter and it was tied 3-3 with the bases loaded.
After the Matadors recorded the first out of the frame, Evan Kuhl came through with a single that brought in two runs and the Chargers were on top 5-3.
A sac fly by Gage Goldberg scored Ballin from third to make it 6-3 and the Chargers weren’t done.
Owen Kuhl singled and pushed in two more runs after Evan Kuhl and Cam Logan scored and it was 8-3 going into the seventh.
In its final at bat, the Matadors went down in order with three straight strikeouts against AJ Grizzaffi, who entered in the fifth and ended up with the win.
Grizzaffi went 1.1 innings and didn’t give up a hit, walk or run and struck out five. He entered for Matthew Booth who started and went 5.2 innings. Booth scattered 7 hits, gave up 2 earned runs, 1 walk and also struck out 5.
Ballin singled, was hit by a pitch, drove in a run and scored twice, Quinn Grable singled, Evan Kuhl finished with 2 hits, 3 RBI and a run scored, Goldberg picked up an RBI, Cam Logan singled and scored, Owen Kuhl took a walk, drove in 2 runs and scored once, Garland Whitehead singled, walked and scored and Aidan Smith hit 2 singles and drew a walk, while Andrew Harrison singled, picked up an RBI and scored a run.
