Turnout slow as early voting comes to an end

With early voting now behind them, Staci Decker’s Kendall County Elections Office team turns its focus to Saturday’s 12-hour Election Day balloting.

Early voting closed at 7 p.m. Tuesday for six candidates competing for three spots on the Boerne City Council and for seven candidates running for the three seats up for grabs on the Boerne Independent School Board.

Fair Oaks Ranch voters also found two bond issues on their ballot — one for $16 million to address reconstruction of four major city thoroughfares, and another to allow the city to continue drawing one-fourth of 1% sales tax to continue providing maintenance and repair of city streets.

Entering Tuesday’s final day of early voting, 1,688 Kendall County residents had cast ballots — 1,170 at the main election

Tuesday totals were unavailable at press time.

Decker, the county’s elections administrator, said turnout was in line with past May council, school board and water district elections.

“Turnout always increases the final two days of early voting,” Decker said. “That’s partly because there are more hours open for voting.”

She said her staff is focused on Saturday’s turnout, which is always a big one.

“Kendall County residents traditionally turn out strong on Election Day,” she said. “We expect to see longer lines all day in both Boerne and Fair Oaks Ranch.”

The first three days of early voting, April 22, 23 and 24, saw 180, 182 and 181 voters cast ballots at the main Boerne election site.

Fair Oaks Ranch opened early voting with 60, 58 and then 73 on its first three days at the city’s Police Department branch polling site.

Turnout spiked tremendously on Friday, April 26 at both sites. The Boerne main site saw 213 votes cast while 103 were registered in Fair Oaks Ranch.

Saturday’s turnout, in contrast, was the smallest in Boerne, with just 73. Monday’s totals rebounded in Boerne to 179 and 91 in Fair Oaks Ranch.

On the ballot for Boerne City Council are District 1 Incumbent Ty Wolosin and his opponent, Jeremy Pratt, District 3 Incumbent Quinten Scott and challenger Dan Weis and District 5 Incumbent Joseph Macaluso, being opposed by Nick Nuth.

The Boerne ISD board races has Mike Stewart and Candace Affeldt challenging current board President Carlin Friar for his Place 1 seat. Competing for the Place 3 seat are Dallas Pipes and Nick Oviedo, while Courtney Darter Bruce and Thomas Nordstrand vie for the Place 5 seat.

Both the Place 3 and 5 seats were left vacant by current board trustees who chose not to run for re-election.
