The Smithson Valley baseball team entered last week without a district loss but when the week was over the Rangers had suffered two defeats, both at the hands of the Chargers.
After a 3-2 win last Tuesday at home, Champion went on the road and defeated Smithson Valley last Friday, 6-2, to sweep the series.
Champion is 24-6 overall and 10-2 in district. The Rangers are also 10-2 in district but the Chargers own the head-to-head tiebreaker against SV if needed.
All the teams close out the regular season with two games this week and if the Chargers win both against Seguin, they wrap up the 26-5A title, regardless of what the Rangers do this week.
Champion was at Seguin Tuesday and hosts the Matadors Friday, while Smithson Valley plays Pieper twice this week.
Champion scored a run in the first after Jordan Ballin walked and came home on an Evan Kuhl double for the 1-0 lead that held until the fifth when they added 3 more runs in the top of the inning .
The Chargers scored its 3 runs in the fifth with two outs. Gage Goldberg had the hit of the inning that broke it open with a bases-loaded single that ended up scoring all three runners to make it 4-0.
The Chargers added 2 more runs in the sixth on a Quinn Grable single and it was 6-0.
It went to the bottom of the seventh with Champion still leading by 6 runs. The Rangers tried to rally and they started the inning with three singles and scored 2 runs but that’s as close as they came.
Matthew Booth went all 7 innings and gave up 6 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks and struck out 4 batters.
The Chargers outhit the Rangers, 8-6, and Evan Kuhl had the only extra base hit with his RBI double in the first. Kuhl also scored a run, Ballin hit 2 singles, took 2 walks and scored twice, Grable hit 2 singles, drove in 2 runs, walked once and scored a run, while Goldberg singled and pushed in 2 runs.
Cam Logan recorded a hit, Owen Kuhl walked and scored, Garland Whitehead singled and Aidan Smith walked and scored. For more on the Chargers, see the Boerne Star.
