Boerne Champion closed out its 2024 softball season Friday at Charger Field when the Chargers hosted Seguin.
The Chargers had an outside chance at a playoff spot entering the week but needed to win Tuesday and also needed some help and weren’t able to get either.
Smithson Valley defeated Champion at Ranger Field Tuesday, 9-1, and drops the Chargers to 12-12-2 overall and 6-7 in district.
Seguin’s win Tuesday at NB Canyon moved them to 8 victories and helped them secure fourth place in the district.
Smithson Valley, Veterans Memorial, Kerrville Tivy and the Matadors will represent 26-5A once the playoffs start next week.
In Tuesday’s game, the Chargers were trailing 7-0 at the end of five innings and scored its only run in the top of the sixth.
Champion hit the ball well in the game and finished with 7 hits, 3 of them in the sixth to score a run. Abby Brehmer singled and then Lillian Ritchie doubled to scored Brehmer and it was 7-1.
Mylie Parker followed and also doubled but Ritchie was held up at third with no outs and the Rangers retired the next three batters with a ground out, strikeout and pop up to end the inning.
Smithson Va l l e y answered with 2 runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 9-1. The Chargers didn’t score in the top of the seventh and it ended there.
Torin Tucker finished with 3 hits – 2 singles and 1 double – and walked once, which was the only walk issue by Rangers pitcher Arianna Capek.
Brehmer singled and scored, Ritchie hit an RBI double, Parker doubled and Madison Coker singled.
Parker went 6 innings and yielded 4 earned runs, 6 walks and struck out 4.
