Geneva School of Boerne and Holy Cross are very evenly matched and both their games this year have been decided by one run, with both teams winning at home.
The Knights won their March 21 meeting 6-5, but the Eagles got a little payback last Friday when they edged Holy Cross in Boerne, 1-0.
Geneva is 15-6 overall and 5-1 in district. They hosted FEAST Tuesday and visit Corpus Christi John Paul II Friday.
The Eagles scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Colton Lutz doubled and then made it to third on an error.
Shawn George followed and singled to bring in Lutz from third and that’s where it stayed in Friday’s defensive struggle.
Not only did George have the game-winning RBI, but he also pitched a great game for the Eagles. He went all seven innings, scattered 2 hits, didn’t give up a run, walked 4 batters and struck out 8 on 97 pitches.
George gave up a single in the third and the Knights runner advanced to second on a sac bunt. From there, Lutz made a catch in right field after the next Holy Cross batter popped up and then Lutz threw out the runner at third, who was trying to tag from second for the double play, to end the inning.
In the fourth frame, a walk and a single gave Holy Cross base runners on the corners with only one out in the inning but George retired the next two batters with a strikeout and a fly out. Those were the two best scoring opportunities for the Knights team that was turned away both times by Geneva.
The Eagles finished with 5 hits, two doubles and a single from Lutz, who also scored the game-winning run. George brought in the game-winning run with his single and Jake Roberson singled.
