Boerne Champion swept its third straight opponent in district baseball last Thursday after they closed out their series against New Braunfels Canyon with a win.
The Chargers defeated the Cougars, 9-2, to sweep the New Braunfels school and improve to 6-0 in district.
Champion is 18-4 overall and tangles with Kerrville Tivy for two games this week. They hosted the Antlers Tuesday and play in Kerrville Friday.
The Chargers were consistent against the Cougars and scored in five of the seven innings but never scored more than 2 runs in any frame.
Champion opened the game with four straight singles and it was 2-0 after Jordan Ballin and Evan Kuhl both crossed home plate.
The Chargers added another run in the third after Kuhl walked, stole second and moved to third on a ground out before eventually scoring on a wild pitch and the lead bumped to 3-0.
NBC had a good inning in the bottom of the third and scored 2 runs with a couple of singles, a double and an error and Champion’s lead was down to 3-2.
But those would be the only two runs the Charger defense gave up while the Charger sticks were just getting going.
Champion closed the game with 2 runs in the fourth, fourth and seventh frames to pull away.
The Chargers finished with 11 hits and Ballin, Kuhl, Garland Whitehead and Cam Logan all tallied 2 hits each. Ballin also walked, drove in a run and scored once, Kuhl walked and scored 3 runs, Whitehead picked up an RBI and scored a run and Logan took 2 walks, pushed in a run and scored 2 runs.
Sam Miller singled and walked, Gage Goldberg singled and collected an RBI, Quinn Grable drove in a run, while Smith doubled and picked up an RBI.
Matthew Booth went 6 innings on the bump and gave up 7 hits, earned run, 1 walk and fanned 6, while AJ Grizzaffi pitched an inning and struck out 3 of the four batters he faced to go with 1 walk and no hits.
