Boerne high schools out early Friday for state basketball in Alamodome

BOERNE — The school day ends early on Friday for Boerne and Champion high schools, allowing students to attend the Boerne Lady Greyhounds’ state semifinal basketball game at The Alamodome.

“In the spirit of ‘One Boerne’ and in support of our peers, both Boerne High School and Champion High School will have an early release day on Friday, March 1,” a release Monday from Boerne ISD stated.

The Greyhounds (34-4) play in the Class 4A state semifinals against Canyon (29-6) on Friday at 3 p.m. The Greyhounds, ranked no. 5 in the state, won their regional final in a hard-fought 31-29 defensive battle over rival Fredericksburg Saturday. This will be Boerne’s third trip in the last four years.

Canyon, ranked no. 8, knocked off Class 4A top-ranked Glen Rose, 47-37, to advance to their 29th trip to the state tournament, having won 20 state titles.

To accommodate the early dismissal, both schools will release at 12:35 p.m. All other BISD schools will release at their regularly scheduled times.

A modified lunch menu will be available for students and staff. All other Boerne ISD athletics and fine arts schedules will remain the same. Any adjustments will be communicated by either the athletic or fine arts departments, according to district sources.

“BHS and CHS will not need to make-up the minutes as BISD has sufficient instructional minutes,” the release states.

“No matter where our BISD teams travel, we represent the Boerne community with excellence and pride,” the release said.

General admission tickets are $19 and are good for both the 1:30 p.m. game the other Class 4A semifinal game — and Boerne’s 3 p.m. tip-off.
