After the Fredericksburg girls basketball team defeated Boerne on their home court in their first-round district meeting, the Lady Greyhounds returned the favor Tuesday night in Fredericksburg.
BHS was at Fred for their second-round meeting Tuesday and had a strong finish to defeat the Billies, 49-37.
The Lady Greyhounds end the regular season at 29-4 overall. They went 10-2 in district and will be the No. 2 seed when the playoffs start Tuesday.
BHS will host Gonzales Tuesday, 7 p.m.
Boerne’s second half in Fredericksburg Tuesday was a far cry from their first-round meeting in Boerne.
In that first meeting, Boerne didn’t hit a single bucket in the second half and only scored 10 points, all from the free-throw line in the third and fourth quarters.
In Tuesday’s game, BHS broke open a close contest in the second half by scoring 34 points.
Boerne was up 10-8 after one, but Fred held a 17-15 lead at the break after they won the second quarter, 9-5.
Boerne started to pull away in the third after outscoring the Billies, 12-7, and took a 27-24 advantage going into the fourth quarter.
Boerne heated up from the outside in the second half and knocked down three timely 3-pointers to get some separation.
Boerne outscored the Billies in the final period, 22-13.
BHS only went 5 for 18 from long range for 27.8 percent and was outshot by Fred from the outside after the Billies went 8 for 18 for 44 percent, but the three 3s Boerne hit down the stretch were the difference.
Another difference was that Boerne had Chloe Donnell back in the lineup. Donnell was hurt in December and suited up for their first-round meeting with the Billies but didn’t play.
Donnell made her presence felt Tuesday after she played 29 minutes and finished with 8 points. She was 2 for 5 from the 3-point line for two of their five 3s in the game.
Abby Smith played the whole game and led the team in scoring with 15 points and made it a double-double with 12 rebounds.
Averi Aaron also turned in a double-double and tallied 11 points and 16 rebounds to go with 4 assists.
Jenna Ruede scored 7 and went 4 for 4 at the free-throw line, Savannah Salinas netted 5 and Addison Palluch hit a 3 for 3 points.
Ruede, Salinas and Smith all came up with 3 steals each.
Taylor Grona of Fredericksburg matched Smith with 15 points.
