The high school track season is here and things haven’t slowed down for one Boerne ISD athlete.

Champion opened its season last Thursday at the Northside meet and Chargers sophomore Elizabeth Leachman set a national record in the 3200.

Leachman posted a time of 9:45.47 to beat the old mark by a couple of seconds.

According to the Milesplit website, the old mark was set in 2018 by Katelyn Tuohy of North Rockland, New York with a time of 9:47.88.

Leachman picked up right where she left off last December after she won the Footlocker Cross Country Nationals. She’s also the 5A state champion in cross country and last spring won the 3200 in track.

Thursday’s meet was Champion’s first of the year. The Chargers and Greyhounds will both be in action Thursday at the Champion Relays.

Both teams will return to Champion for the Boerne High Relays the following week, Feb. 15.
