Champion boys, girls capture regional titles

Boerne Champion doubled its pleasure after the Chargers boys and girls cross country teams both captured regional titles at Monday’s Region IV-5A meet in Corpus Christi.

The Lady Chargers also had the top individual runner at Monday’s meet after Elizabeth Leachman ran away from the field to take the individual title, while a couple other Champion runner on the boys and girls side also finished in the top 10 with adjusted scoring.

Both Charger running squads will race at the 5A state meet set for Friday, Nov. 3, at Old Settler’s Park in Round Rock. The girls compete at 8:30 a.m. and the boys run at 9:10 a.m.

Varsity Girls

Champion won the region with 101 points compared to second-place Laredo Nixon (129). NB Canyon was third (131) and McAllen came in fourth (156) to all qualify for state.

Leachman posted a time of 16:50.61 to beat the second-place runner by almost two minutes, Kynley Albright finished 8th with a time of 19:42.29, Emma Rice completed the course in 20:33.63 for 28th, Breanna Hempton placed 31st with a 20:46.27, Kiley Johnson ran the race in a time of 20:54.36 for 39th, Luciana Zazueta Ibarra recorded a 21:24.55 for 56th and Grace Mondini rounded out the team after running a 22:07.66 for 89th.

Varsity Boys

The Champion boys tallied 86 points for first, while Lockhart (127), Weslaco East (141) and Alamo Heights (180) went 2-3-4 to qualify for state in the field of 24 teams.

In adjusted scoring, Luis Tovar took 8th with a time of 16:23.57, Charlie Houck came in 10th after posting a 16:29.23, Caleb Dehart placed 15th with a time of 16:41.84, Ben Matamoros was two spots back in 17th after running a 16:43.71, Noah Perez finished the race in 17:16.43 for 36th, Matthew Duran completed the course in a time of 17:21.12 for 54th and Patrick Thornton rounded out the team with a time of 17:40.41 for 65th.
