Geneva returns to action, opens district play Friday

After a week off, the Geneva School of Boerne football team returns to action Friday to begin district play.

The Eagles visit Corpus Christi John Paul II Friday for a 7 p.m. contest.

Geneva ended non-district play at 4-3 and will have had a full 14 days off between games since they last played Thursday Oct. 5 and won’t play again until Oct. 20.

Eagles coach Grant Gaston said they eased off and let the starters rest and heal up from the normal bumps and bruises they accumulated throughout non-district play. He noted that it gave an opportunity for some of the younger players a chance to get in some work. Because of numbers, Geneva only has one team and doesn’t carry a JV squad.

“During the off-week we focused a lot of our energy on our younger players and giving them additional opportunities to work and improve on their basics,” he said.

Gaston said it’s hard to believe how fast the first seven weeks of the season flew by.

The Eagles are down to three regular season games. This Friday at CC JP II, at Schertz John Paull II the following week and then home to close out district play against Holy Cross.

“It is amazing how quickly the season goes each year. You feel like you’re just getting started and suddenly the regular season is nearing the end,” he said. “We don’t want the season to end!”

Corpus Christi John Paul II is 3-3 after non-district play and Gaston said they used multiple fronts on defense to try to confuse the offense.

“They are very multiple on defense so we don’t necessarily know how they will plan to defend us,” Gaston said. “Coach Ramirez is working hard to build that program up and you can already see a lot of positive results.”

Geneva ended non-district play with a 49-43 overtime win vs. Brentwood Christian. The Eagles were trailing at halftime to the Austin school, 28-7 but scored four touchdowns in the third quarter to make a game of it.

The Eagles tied the Bears in the second half and then won it in overtime. Gaston said it’s all about getting better during their stretch run as they try to clinch a playoff spot.

“Right now, we just want to focus on leveling-up each week,” he said. “For most of the season, we’ve leveled up each week, and that climb up the staircase has to continue for us to reach our goals. We need to stay focused and hungry.”
