Library programs drawing crowds

THE BOOKWORM

THE BOOKWORM

The library has been incredibly busy since school started up again.

In the Youth Department, the staff brought back its three regular story times. Sensory Studio is set for 9 a.m. Wednesday, with Little Listeners following at 10:30 a.m. On the same day, we have an evening story time called Bouncing On The Bed, which is a music and movement program for little ones. It starts at 5 p.m. and lasts about 30 minutes.

Each Thursday at 9:30 a.m., our littlest patrons can hear stories, sing songs, and enjoy fingerplays during “Book Babies."

On Mondays, the staff implemented a “Grand Connections” program at 1 p.m., a time for grandmas and grandpas to bring their young charges and get to know other grandparents who are doing the same thing.

The afterschool children have an opportunity to participate in several fun, new programs. On Mondays and Thursdays, youngsters can play video games during our “Game On” programs at 4 p.m. On Tuesdays at 4 p.m., emerging readers can practice their skills reading aloud to a therapy pup or two, during our “PAWS 4 Reading” activity.

And at 4 p.m. on Fridays, anything goes with our “Freaky Friday” program. Children will be surprised each week with a new activity or craft.

Teentastic programs

Leah Mayo, the new Young Adult Coordinator, has had enormous crowds in the teen area known as “The Hub” each afternoon.

In addition to all the nifty resources available to them, the kids also have three weekly programs in which they can participate.

On “Touch Grass Tuesdays” they go outside for a fun activity designed to get “some of the wigglies out.” In the first week, the kids had to figure out how to eat donuts hanging from trees -- without using their hands. The next week, they enjoyed a cookout with hotdogs, hamburgers, and chips.

“Wednesday Crafternoons” is all about using hands and minds to create fun crafts. So far, they’ve created origami wishing stars and popsicle stick catapults.

“Throwdown Thursdays” is all about gaming in our fully equipped gaming room. The teens are encouraged to join the competition with others, to end up with a final winner.

Adult programming

Our many discussion groups have continued without a break because our members love meeting up with old friends and talking about a variety of topics.

We offer discussions on mysteries, literary fiction, nonfiction, poetry, eclectic literature, and topics that may have opposing viewpoints. We are always looking for new people to join us for these completely free programs, so please let us know if you’re interested.

Additionally, history buffs can join in on our regular Magical History Tours. Just check our web calendar for dates and times.

On the second Wednesday, crafters and crime buffs can listen to a true-crime podcast while working on their favorite projects. The group takes occasional breaks to discuss what they think about the clues and interviews they’re listening to. We start a brand-new season in October, so please consider coming to listen with us.

Music lovers can join us at 7 p.m. on the third Thursday for a live musical performance in our “Live! At the Library” series.

Family programming Our library’s game night committee -- Mary, Libby, and I -- just hosted our third quarterly family event where 50 people came to play Bingo. The three of us are interested in offering low-tech game alternatives for people who enjoy board games, trivia, bunco, etc.

Our next public event for families will take place next summer, so keep an eye out for more news regarding these fun programs.

Staff member Alison Topper hosts her “Monthly Makerspace,” which is typically open to the whole family. The goal is to come together as a family and learn how to do something new.

We typically see 40 to 45 people at these events. We recently hosted one on Sept. 12 featuring a guest instructor who taught attendees how to make beautiful custom- made greeting cards.

In October, families will be able to create charming, quilted hearts that can be used as decorations. Please join us if you enjoy crafting.
