• Public Reading of the U.S. Constitution, Patrick Heath Public Library amphitheater, 10-11 a.m. Join the Genealogical Society of Kendall County and The George W. Kendall Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) for a public reading of the Constitution. Community leaders will take turns reading from the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Attendees will go home with personal copies, courtesy of the DAR chapter.

• Story time: Hummingbirds, 10-11 a.m., Guadalupe River State Park amphitheater, 3350 Park Road 31 in Spring Branch. Join Ranger Jessica as she reads a story, “Dancers in the Garden”; then make a hummingbird feeder to take home. Afterward, participants will head to the woodland bird blind to see hummingbirds in action. (Sorry, no pets allowed on the trip to see the birds.)

• Boerne Style Show and Shopping, The Bevy Hotel, 6-9 p.m. Join Boerne retailers for a night out. Keep an eye out on the catwalk for upcoming trends that can be found in local Boerne shops. Tickets: boerneretailersstyleandshop.com.

Herff Farm Bird Survey, Herff Farm, 8-11:30 a.m. Volunteers will help identify and count bird species in the riparian, savannah, and human structure habitats of Herff Farm and submit findings online. There will be several miles of walking on generally flat ground. A good opportunity to practice and expand birding skills; all levels of birding experience are welcome. • Ribbon-cutting at Napa Auto Parts Boerne, 7 Cascade Cavern in Boerne, 11:30 a.m.-noon. NAPA Auto Parts has been servicing the Boerne and Kendall County area since 1973. They will also be having a huge tool and equipment sale.

• Movie Classics: “Genevieve,” at The Center at Kronkosky, 17 Old San Antonio Road, 1-3 p.m. PHPL is hosting a classic movie screening once a month at the Center at Kronkosky. • Teen Event: Drug and Substance Abuse Awareness, 6-7:30 p.m. in the PHPL amphitheater, 451 N. Main St. Sponsoring is St. Mark Presbyterian Church, its third annual teen event open to all teens in the area. This is a joint effort with Hill Country Family Services, addressing an important topic in our community for the good health of our youth, young adults, and future community leaders. This program includes a number of community leaders from this area of expertise and resources will be available.

• Women of Excellence & Purpose, First United Methodist Church, 11.a.m. to 1:30 p.m. This will be the first annual Christian Job Corps Kendall- Bandera Counties Benefit Luncheon. Additional information: [email protected]

• Free College Planning Workshop, Boerne Chamber of Commerce Boardroom, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Learn how the college admissions games works, when to start applying, financial aid myths, information about college savings plans and questions to ask schools before applying.

• Scenic Overlook Nature Hike, Guadalupe River State Park, 9-10:30 a.m. Join a Texas Master Naturalist to learn about local geological features, the importance of water, and local flora and fauna. The trail is less than ¾-mile long and mostly level with a few rocky areas. All ages; friendly dogs, on leash, are welcome. No need to register.

• The Spazmatics 6-11 p.m. at The Roundup Outdoor Music Venue, 531 FM 3351 in Boerne. The Roundup will once again host the Spazmatics, to benefit Voss Middle School; all ticket sales go directly back to the school. Bring your friends and neighbors for a fun night with The Spazmatics. • Attend the inaugural Karnival 4 Kids Fundraiser benefiting LOVE Kendall County Kids, at Vic Vaughn Toyota, 31205 I-10 frontage Road in Boerne. All funds raised from the event will go directly to Kendall County children in need. This family-friendly event will feature approximately 20 game booths, bounce houses, a petting zoo, ample food and drink, and much more.

• Boerne Volunteer Fire Department holds its annual fish fry from 4-10:30 p.m. at the Kendall County Fairgrounds. The Boerne Volunteer Fire Department’s Annual Fish Fry Fundraiser is back funds raised by the event go toward equipment and apparatus purchase, as well as and training needs for the year.

• The Boerne Duck Derby is set to float at Boerne City Lake from 9:3011 a.m. Add a little extra fun to your day at the lake -- hundreds of “adopted” rubber ducks will dive into Boerne City Lake and race toward the finish line. • 6th annual Boerne BierFest at the AgriCultural Museum and Arts Center, noon-6 p.m. Use your commemorative stein to sample from 30-plus of the best craft breweries in Texas and beyond. Beer is just part of the fun -- Boerne BierFest also serves up great food, live music including headliner Gary P. Nunn, traditional feats of strength, art displays, and a live auction, all benefiting Hill Country Council for the Arts.

UPCOMING EVENTS SEPTEMBER 30

• First Families celebration at the Family Life Center, St. John Lutheran Church, 3125 Rosewood Ave., beginning at 10:30 a.m. The Genealogical Society of Kendall County will recognize descendants from 13 First Families of Kendall County. First Family certificates will be awarded at a ceremony; a light lunch will follow. The public is welcome.

OCTOBER 7

• 8th Street Market’s 16th Vintage Flea, on Eighth Street in Comfort, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. More than 30 vendors are expected to participate in the ‘mini Roundtop.’ Vintage, antiques, art, artisans, food and wine offer a great event for the whole family.

OCTOBER 12

• Kendall County Republican Club meets at 6 p.m. at Nelson City Dance Hall. Guest speaker will be Christine Welborn, executive director of Advancing Integrity. Doors open at 5:45 p.m.; social time with cash bar is 5:45-6:15 p.m. Cost is $30 per person, which includes full dinner and the program. Registration deadline is September 28. OCTOBER 21

• The Boerne Area Model Society is hosting its annual Fall Fun Fly at Joshua Springs Park, 716 FM 289 in Comfort. Pilot’s registration begins at 8 a.m., with the preflight meeting at 9 a.m. Pilots from the Boerne area as well as San Antonio and Kerrville will be flying their radio control aircraft -- small and large, prop-driven planes to EDF (electric- ducted fan), jets and helicopters. A raffle and silent auction are planned. This is an Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA)-sanctioned event.
