Geneva School of Boerne was finally able to play a game at home Friday when the Eagles hosted La Pryor and the home team used a fast start to defeat the Bulldogs, 35-12.
The Eagles improved to 2-1 and visits Blanco Friday.
Geneva head coach Grant Gaston said it was good to finally play before the home crowd. Not only were the Eagles’ first two games on the road, but they were far away, with trips to Katy and Dilley.
“It was great, we had all our fans out here with all the tailgating,” he said. “It was a great atmosphere.”
Geneva came out fast and was leading 14-0 less than two minutes into the game. K.P. Fitzgerald got behind the Bulldogs defense twice and hauled in two Jacob Rosenstiel passes for TDs of 19 and 48 yards.
Fitzgerald, celebrating his birthday Friday, also came up with a fumble recovery and intercepted a pass in the first half.
“He’s like an extra coach on the team,” Gaston said of Fitzgerald.
Noah Brunsvold helped cap the first quarter with a 66-yard scamper into the end zone and it was 21-0 after the Walker Cone extra point.
In the second quarter, Brady Chandler snagged a pass from Rosenstiel and went 40 yards for a score and the 28-0 lead.
Later in the period, after a bad snap on a La Pryor punt attempt, the Eagles took over at the Bulldogs 1-yard line. Two plays later, Chandler and Rosenstiel connected for another score after Rosenstiel found Chandler in the back of the end zone on a short pass to make it 35-0 after the Cone PAT with 2:45 before the half.
It turned into an interesting second half as the Eagles only had the ball for seven plays and basically one possession after the Bulldogs strung together two clock-chewing drives.
The first drive ate 7:05 off the clock and lead to La Pryor’s first score. The other went an amazing 17 plays, took 13:43 off the clock and covered 80 yards before the Bulldogs scored again.
In the 24-minute second half, La Pryor held the ball for almost 21 minutes. Geneva’s lone drive resulted in a missed field goal. The only other time they had the ball in the half came with 31 seconds left in the game so they just went into victory formation.
Gaston said he knew the Bulldogs were capable of piecing together long drives, but added that they did enough in the first half to secure the win.
“We had one drive on offense (in the second half), but that’s why we needed to start fast because if we had those types of drives against us, it wasn’t going to cost us the game,” he said.
