The fifth annual “Homemade Salsa Contest” helps launch the 117th annual Kendall County Fair, which opens Friday, Sept. 1 for its traditional three-day Labor Day weekend run.
A livestock show, pro rodeo, carnival, exhibit halls, and contests of all kinds are planned throughout with major entertainers taking the fairgrounds stage each night.
Admission throughout the fair is $20 per person at the gate, with kids 8 and under admitted free. The fair runs Friday, 5 p.m.-midnight; and Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. each day.
But the fifth annual homemade salsa contest kicks things off.
“Whether it’s your grandma or grandpa’s recipe that’s been in the family for centuries, or one you created yourself, we love to see your entry trying for the bragging rights,” says the Kendall County Fair website teaser.
There’s a $5 entry fee per exhibitor, with only the first 20 entries accepted for judging.
Salsa must be homemade from scratch, and all entries must include the recipe used for creating the salsa.
Judges will give each entry the once-over, based on aroma, color, flavor, heat and texture. A side note from organizers, “remember judges taste your Salsa, so don’t make your Salsa so HOT the judges can’t taste the salsa.”
First place is worth $50, second goes for $35 and third pulls in a cool $25. A “People’s Choice Award” allows event attendees the opportunity to taste each entry and judge for themselves. The salsa maker who pulls in the most People’s Choice votes not only gets bragging rights, but $25 for their effort.
The homemade salsa contest is sponsored this year by Kendall County Roofing. For official rules and guidelines, contact Marilyn Culak at 830-249-2839.
