Flinn named editor of the Star

BOERNE – Granite Media Partners Inc. named Jeff B. Flinn, a reporter and editor with nearly 40 years of experience, as the new managing editor of the Boerne Star.

Flinn, 63, formerly a managing editor and reporter with the Northeast Herald newspaper in San Antonio, stepped into his new role July 13.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have Jeff join the team. He is an incredibly talented journalist who can cover everything from local elections to sports,” said Thomas Edwards, executive editor for Granite, which owns the Star and nine other Texas newspapers.

Flinn broke into the news business in 1984 as a reporter for the Carlsbad Current-Argus in Carlsbad, New Mexico. After filling in for a brief period as news editor, he was named the Current-Argus managing editor in 1988.

As an education and investigative reporter, Flinn uncovered a fraud and embezzlement scandal in 1985 and 1986 that forced a New Mexico Cabinet-level designee to resign, led to the breakup of a mental-health service organization and landed one of the mental-health facility’s administrators in prison for five years.

Flinn moved to the San Antonio area in 1995, initially as a reporter with the now-defunct Northside Recorder under Prime Time Newspapers Inc.

After a 16-month stint as a project supervisor for a San Antonio consumer-research firm, he returned to the newsroom in 2000, landing a spot as managing editor of The Herald, which later became the Northeast Herald under ownership of the San Antonio Express-News.

The new managing editor said he expects to continue producing well-written articles for the Star, the published voice of Boerne since 1906.

Flinn will also assume hosting and interviewing duties for “The Boerne Brew,” a weekly program produced in partnership with KBRN Radio 103.9 FM and 1500 AM. The show airs 8:30 a.m. Saturdays and is also archived by the Star.

Flinn and his wife of 35 years live in the area and have three adult children.
