A fast start helped the Champion baseball team get past Veterans Memorial during Tuesday’s district contest in Boerne.

The Chargers tallied 7 runs in the first and then added 3 more in the second and third frames for 13 runs in its first three at bats. Champion didn’t score after the third inning but didn’t have to as they went on to defeat the Patriots, 13-7.

Champion is 15-4-1 overall and 3-0 in district. They played at Veterans Memorial Friday to close out their series. They’ll tangle with New Braunfels Canyon twice next week, with Tuesday’s game at NBC and Friday at home.

The Chargers finished with 8 hits on Tuesday, while the Patriots scattered 7 hits to get its 7 runs. Vet- erans Memorial scored 2 in the second and third to make it 13-4 after three innings. The Patriots added 3 in the fifth but would get no closer.

Four of Champion’s 8 hits were doubles, but a couple of big hits came from Cam Logan, who drove in 5 runs in the game. Logan brought in 3 in the first and added a 2 RBI single in the third and also scored a run.

Gage Goldberg knocked out 2 doubles, while Grant Kinzel and Rowdy Miller both added doubles. Kinzel drove in 2 runs with his hit and also scored twice, Goldberg finished with 2 RBI and also scored a run, while Miller picked up an RBI on his hit.

Evan Kuhl singled, scored and picked up an RBI, Jordan Ballin walked and scored, Quinn Grable singled, walked and scored twice, Ethan Harrison and Jared Wingo both scored once, Garland Whitehead singled and drove in a run, while Andrew Frei plated 2 runs.

Miller went 2 innings on the hill and picked up the win. He gave up a hit, an earned run, walked 2 and struck out 3. Aidan Smith went 2.1 innings and Matthew Booth threw the last 2.2 frames.

Smith gave up 2 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks and fanned 2, while Booth yielded 4 hits, 1 run, 1 walk and sat down 3.
