September 19, 1945 – March 14, 2023
Michael John Bidus was born in Hinsdale, Illinois, to Stanley Bidus and Julia Gondek on Sept. 19, 1945, and passed away on March 14, 2023, at the age of 77 years. The majority of his growing up years were spent in Downers Grove, Illinois, and upon graduation from Georgetown University in Washington DC, he married his hometown girlfriend Carol Stromberg and began a 22-year career as an Air Force Intelligence Officer.
Mike, Carol and their children had military assignments in San Angelo and San Antonio, Texas; Ft. Meade, Maryland; Hof and Berlin, Germany; RAF Chicksands, England; and Redlands, California. During overseas assignments, the family enjoyed traveling throughout Europe and Great Britain.
Mike retired from the military in San Antonio and began a second career in the nonprofit sector where, after two years as a Development Director at the American Heart Association, he was hired and served for twelve years as the first Executive Director of the Lackland Air Force Base Fisher Houses, which provide free housing for family members of patients hospitalized at Wilford Hall Medical Center.
After he retired for a second time, Mike, Carol and their youngest daughter moved to Boerne in 1994 where Mike was actively involved in the Boerne Rotary Club and, for a number of years, was President of the Hill Country Mission for Health which provides health care services for uninsured and under insured Kendall County residents.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, and is survived by his wife of 57 years and four children — Kimberly Finnegan (Tom), Michael Bidus (Elizabeth), Brent Bidus (Tracy), and Lara Rhyner (Ted); nine grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and two brothers Mark and Martin (Coleen).
A 10:00 am rosary, and a 10:30 am memorial Mass celebrating Mike’s life will be held at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Boerne, Texas, on Monday, April 10th, followed by a reception in the church’s Cana Ballroom.
