Champion baseball goes 5-1 at Leander tourney

The Boerne Champion baseball team closed out regular-season tournament play last weekend after they took part in the Leander tourney for its third and final tournament of the season.

The Boerne Champion baseball team closed out regular-season tournament play last weekend after they took part in the Leander tourney for its third and final tournament of the season.

Champion played six games and won its first five games before suffering its only loss in the last game of the tournament. The Chargers played well and went 5-1 to stand at 12-3-1 overall.

They opened district play at Wagner on Tuesday. Champion has a busy week and hosted Alamo Heights Wednesday and welcomes Wagner on Friday at 1 p.m.

The Chargers began play with an 8-1 win over Boyd last Thursday. Champion scored 4 runs in the first and tacked on single runs in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth.

They finished with 6 hits including doubles from Wyatt Chandler, Gage Goldberg and Garland Whitehead.

Goldberg drove in 3 runs, Jordan Ballin took 2 walks, drove in 2 runs and scored twice, while Evan Kuhl hit 2 singles and scored 3 runs.

Rowdy Miller went 5 innings on the hill and picked up the win on 74 pitches. He didn’t give up a run, just one hit, fanned 6 and walked 3. Nate Mayo finished out and yielded a hit and a run with 3 walks.

Up next on Thursday, the Chargers skunked Leander Glenn 10-0 in 5 innings. Champion was up 4-0 by the third and then plated 6 runs in the fourth to blow it open.

Champion finished with 9 hits after Jordan Ballin hit 2 singles, drove in 2 runs and scored once, Gage Goldberg doubled and singled, picked up an RBI and scored a run, Ethan Harrison hit 2 singles, scored once and collected an RBI, while Aidan Smith knocked out 2 singles and pushed in 3 runs.

Braden Cain singled and scored, while Quinn Grable, Wyatt Chandler and Andrew Frei all scored single runs.

Aidan Smith was the winning pitcher and went 4 innings on the hill. He only tossed 45 pitches, scattered 2 hits, didn’t give up a run or a walk and struck out 4. Ethan Harris closed it out in the fifth and struck out 2 in his shutout inning.

On Friday, the Chargers won a 5-1 contest over Austin High. Champion knocked out 7 hits and took advantage of 4 Austin High errors.

Quinn Grable and Jared Wingo both doubled, with Grable driving in a run and scoring once. Ethan Harrison hit 2 singles and scored twice, while Evan Kuhl, Jordan Ballin and Matthew Booth all singled with Kuhl and Ballin both scoring and driving in runs.

Booth went all 7 innings on the bump and scattered 5 hits and gave up 1 run, 2 walks and fanned 4 on an efficient 80 pitches.

The Chargers returned to the diamond and recorded a 4-0 victory over the Hutto Hippos. Champion scratched for 2 runs in the first, followed by single runs in the second and fourth frames to get the win behind 6 hits, all singles.

Quinn Grable knocked out 2 singles and picked up an RBI, while Jordan Ballin, Wyatt Chandler, Ethan Harrison and Jacob Schwope all hit 1 single each.

Kuhl, Ballin, Chandler and Harrison scored, with Ballin and Gage Goldberg picking up RBIs.

Jacob Schwope was the winning pitcher and scattered 2 hits on 86 pitches, while not giving up a walk or a run and striking out 8.

The Chargers returned to the field on Friday and defeated Lake Travis 10-2. After falling behind 1-0 in the first, Champion exploded for 9 runs in the bottom of the second to take control.

In that second inning, the Chargers sent 13 batters to the plate and the big hit came from Evan Kuhl, who cleared the bases with a triple. Champion also added 6 singles and 3 walks in the frame to get its 9 runs.

Kuhl picked up 3 RBI on his triple and scored a run, while Ethan Harrison hit 2 singles, scored once and also pushed in 3 runs. Jordan Ballin, Quinn Grable, Cam Logan, Braden Cain, Andrew Frei and Nic Cortez all singled.

Ballin, Grable, Logan and Cortez all plated 1 run each, while Garland Whitehead and Frei both crossed home plate twice.

Jackson Melanson picked up the win on 85 pitches and gave up 4 hits, 2 runs, 4 walks and fanned 4.

The Chargers closed out the tourney with a 13-0 loss to Flower Mound. Champion recorded 3 hits in the game, a double from Jordan Ballin, along with singles from Sam Miller and Cam Logan.

Robbie Vela, Andrew Paulson and Nate Mayo all pitched in the game. Paulson went the longest at 55 pitches and struck out 3.
